Data from studies on long-acting injectable HIV medications for treatment and prevention will be available. The hope is that HIV-positive folks will be required to have only one injection session per month. Even better news: Less frequent injections may be effective in preventing HIV.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) will expand in this country, as cities like Chicago, New York and San Francisco offer patient assistance (along with the one provided by the manufacturer of Truvada).
A drug given as a shot once every three months could replace a daily pill regimen to prevent HIV infection, new animal studies suggest. In two trials of 28 monkeys, researchers gave one group shots of an experimental HIV-preventive drug, while the others received a placebo. The monkeys were exposed to HIV at a few different times during the trials. Those given the drug remained healthy; those who got the placebo were infected. The drug had a protective window of about 10 weeks.
Though the research is preliminary and has been tried only on monkeys, doctors hope it will lead to a medication that would need to be administered only once a quarter. Human trials could start in a matter of months, says Chasity Andrews, study author and a scientist with the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at Rockefeller University in New York City.
More one-pill, once-a-day combination regimens will receive FDA approval as more pharmaceutical companies collaborate.
Patients running out of treatment options for resistant HIV will have access to two attachment inhibitors at the same time. Researchers hope these two agents will treat multi-resistant HIV since they provide a different mode of action.
CD4 count is a measure of our immune system's strength. Treatment should be started before HIV has done too much damage to our immune system. it is recommend that we start treatment when our CD4 drops below 500. Some experts recommend starting at even earlier stages of HIV disease, when CD4 counts are above 500 or as soon as HIV is detectable by recent fourth generation tests as more early treatment is started better is control no reservoir left out so no recurrance.
Testing is must most person desnot know whether they are positive instead of testing stds, blood donors, pregnant person TB suffering patient universal testing for every body is being advocated sthat early diagnosis and treatment is started.
Pre exposure prophylaxsis id doing great work to prevent hiv in non infected partners of Gay and hetrosexuals so it shuld be used more in more different combinations, even accidentally pricked or cntaminated person in hospital or otherwise by unsafe sex should start POST EXPOSuRE PROPHYLAXSIS with in 72 hrs if surce is suspected or confirmed or anonymous .
HIV cure research will overcome recent setbacks as more effective HIV reservoir-purging compounds and immune-based approaches are studied.
