DOUBTS ABOUT NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
NAMASMARAN, is a fundamental and universal solution (other solutions being adjuvant) for the perceptible transition from individual and universal problems; to individual and universal blossoming.
In rigid and unquestioning body consciousness; we can be callous and oblivious to the pain of others. We can be “happy” and “stoic” and free of doubts; whether we practice NAMASMARAN or not; till; we ourselves are not inflicted; or are in tribulations.
But doubts creep in our mind; due to sensitive and inquisitive body consciousness; manifesting into our genuine concern; for the sectarian and piecemeal approaches and policies; revolving around petty perspectives, thoughts and vested interests; in various (political, social, economic, medical, industrial, agricultural, educational and even ‘religious and spiritual’) fields; to everyone’s detriment.
We cannot be happy and fulfilled from anything else; other than self realization, that is freedom from the overwhelming impact of body consciousness. This is true liberation or mukti or Nirvana; and is coupled with universally beneficial policies and their actual implementation in all the fields of life.
If NAMASMARAN is meant for mere ‘self realization’ and not for social revolution; then how can merging in NAMASMARAN completely; be cosmic self, the reflection of which is the universe and society? Hence there cannot be any individual liberation without the actual reflection (the details of which may vary) in personal and social life.
All the ideas and pursuits of “personal” liberation; without tangible changes in environment; are petty and actually counterproductive. But the feeling of personal liberation in absence of such changes; is theoretically possible; as nothing is impossible! The concerned individual himself or herself; has to decide; whether he/she is; on the way of liberation or actually liberated; or is callous and in self deception.
Doubts about NAMASMARAN creep in mind; because of the agonies of the burning problems of the people; at global to local levels; in as much as the doubts spurt by our physical pains, financial crisis, and humiliation in personal life. There is no disagreement and no denial; that this is due to the body consciousness.
NAMASMARAN, is inseparable from globally beneficial perspective, policies, plans and programs, to be evolved by the leaders in different fields, and their meticulous implementation by the masses; and thereby; the successful individual and universal blossoming in actual day to day life.
All this can be disproved by their own examples; if self realized people, having nothing to do about society and have no influence on the society whatsoever; bring forth other evidences of their self realization

STRESS, AND KULADEVATA (THE FAMILY DEITY): DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

STRESS, AND KULADEVATA (THE FAMILY DEITY): DR. SHRINIWAS
KASHALIKAR
One of the varieties of STRESS is; one that results from severance from the habitat or childhood atmosphere. In our life this STRESS results because of being away from our native place, family members, and childhood friends and often neglected or ignored but important entity called KULADEVATA i.e. family deity.
Most of us belonging to the Hindu way of life; have their family deity and the temples of family deity in their respective native places. The customs and traditions of worshipping family deities differ some what, but in essence; they involve; regular visit to the temples of the family deities; especially on the occasion of yearly festivals of celebration called jatra.
Many of us instinctively know; the kind of STRESS resulting from the deprivation of habitat; and hence make a yearly religious visit without fail; to the temple of KULADEVATA, on the occasion of jatra.
In our early childhood we used to go to Walaval, where there is a temple of our family deity Laxmi Narayan. We traveled in our neighbor; Mr. Chintamni (fondly called Chintu) Patankar’s hired; van like private vehicle.
The narrow brick red roads to Walaval; flanked by the greenery, the water streams, the rivulets, the typical shacks selling hot tea and bhaji (the smell of which percolated in the atmosphere and titillated the olfactory sense and taste buds), the houses with tiled roofs and lastly the temple of Laxmi-Narayan (also called Dev Narayan) are still very fresh in the memory.
The Laxmi Narayan temple is several centuries old and there is a lake by its side. In those days; the lake appeared fearsome as we did not know swimming and there was the belief that at least one or two persons died in the lake! The pujaris (the people appointed for worship of the deity); had maintained the sanctity of the temple, which created a sense of reverence and awe! These feelings and even the taste of the simple; but fresh and hot food; served by our distant relatives, linger in our minds even today.
But later I came in touch with Marxist analysis of poverty and misery in the society. Since I had no strong enough argument to counter the Marxist analysis, my beliefs somewhat drifted (in search of truth), from the family deity Dev Narayan, who appeared to be redundant and restricted to the temple and provide no solutions to challenges in personal and social life.
But today we are convinced that Marxist analysis; (though definitely more advanced than the indolent, parasitic, helpless and deterministic outlook), has to be culminated quickly into the globally blossoming process of self realization.
Thus God is one, but deities are many. Every family has a family deity. The child is introduced to the deity right from the birth. This introduction is immensely important because it keeps reminding the individual about the destination viz. blossoming into comic consciousness!
Thus the family deity is a forward step, made easy by parents, towards the realization of truth! At that age, no amount of philosophy can work. In fact it can be counterproductive and convert young minds into fanatic fascist robots. It is this introduction, familiarity and actual participation in the activities meted out for individual and social blossoming that constitute; some of the valuable aspects of acculturation called SANSKARA.
Today we are under the stress of being away from our habitat. Let us understand that being educated in alien atmosphere, alien curriculum and alien ideology; boosts and bloats our ego and disgruntlement. We then keep grumbling about our literature, our deities, our history, our capabilities and our future. We turn against our own ancestors and culture as if they were villains and we are heroes! Such self destructiveness; turns us away from the loving ambience of our families and family deities. We egoistically think that the family deity provided no solutions (as if he/she was supposed to provide ones); and hence is redundant and restricted to the temple. This arrogance and disgruntlement itself is the hallmark of stress resulting from the deprivation of habitat.
How can going back to this habitat physically and intellectually be extremely pleasant and beneficial in Total Stress Management?
Return to our families and family deities; is reunification of our-selves with our emotional roots. We are introduced to the family deity right from our birth. When no amount of philosophy can work; or in fact can convert our young minds into fanatic fascist robs; the introduction, familiarity and actual participation in the rituals of KULADEVATA enrich our habitat and ensure; individual and global blossoming. This is how going back (if we are broken away) to our family deity and physically and intellectually would ensure Total Stress Management.
The family deity conceptually then grows into cosmic consciousness and the individual develops cosmic perspective in the course of time.
Family deity is a very important and vital component of the process of individual and global blossoming and emancipation!
Our family deity lives in the beautiful temple located in the beautiful place mentioned above viz. Walaval in Kudal Taluka, Sindhudurga district, Maharashtra state, India. Even as Dev Narayan is my family deity, any one who visits the temple, would be reminded and reoriented to the cosmic consciousness in the course of time, besides being rejuvenated by the especially invigorating ambience!
However the humility and openness; is very much required for the physical and intellectual return to KULADEVATA i.e. family deity (and Total Stress Management); and subsequent orientation to the cosmic consciousness; becomes possible through the practice of NAMASMARAN.
We may not believe all this; but can think over and verify!

STRESS AND KULADEVATA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
In India; thousands of family groups worship different kuladaivatas or kuladevatas. Kula means pedigree and daivata or devata means deity. The temples of these deities are present in different villages and people assemble periodically in these temples and worship the deities with different customs and traditions. The yearly congregations are called jatras and constitute a great event of cultural rejuvenation, unification and harmonization.
In my view these kuladaivatas or kuladevatas are the divine doors to the home of ultimate truth. They are divine branches of the root embodying eternal truth. These are divine channels or divine routes; to the abode of absolute truth.
As I have discussed in my books such as Hitguj and Shambhavi, the temples in general; constitute; the unending springs of vitality and rejuvenation. These are the places where individuals can consume the sacred sap of enlightenment and transcend above their petty ego, petty aspirations and petty pursuits.
NAMASKAR is prostrating in front of the idols. We may feel that this is meekness or lowliness. But that is not so. In fact; just as a person with bamboo spine; cannot bend due to inability; similarly a person with mental rigidity and inflexible ego; is unable to prostrate or do NAMSKAR. It is egoistic arrogance and lack of humility. It is not a sign of strength but a sign of weakness and fragility. It is a sign of apprehension and phobia of breaking; if one bends!
NAMASKAR or prostration; is an achievement in terms of being able to surrender one’s ego, subjectivity or pettiness; at least to some extent!
Recently I visited and stayed in the temple of Shri Dev Narayan (our kuladaivata); situated in a scenic place called Walaval. Apart from the superlative rejuvenating experience, I also realized that we visit these places; only periodically and as a matter of custom and tradition. But otherwise we neglect them. We get engrossed in trivialities of life; and lose the vital core of our life residing in these temples! These sources of eternal empowerment and enlightenment are therefore; grossly “emaciated”, “weakened”, “paralyzed” and “helpless”!
The holistic solution; which treats and heals the root of the problem is NAMASMARAN. It heals the heart and soul of universe. It inspires us; to worship these deities; not as a matter of mere tradition; but as a source of universal rejuvenation, unity and harmony! It gives several creative and holistically benevolent ideas, plans and projects; in and around all the temples and places of worship, which in turn can rejuvenate the mankind!

PRACTICE, PREACHING AND PROMOTION: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

PRACTICE, PREACHING AND PROMOTION: DR. SHRINIWAS
KASHALIKAR
It is often said that practice is more important than merely preaching and promotion. This is obviously true; in case of those who preach and promote something for petty gains; and practice something else; for money, power, adulations or more lowly gains; at the cost of others.
But this is also true for those who unknowingly preach and promote NAMASMARAN more; and practice less!
Why does this happen?
Living (practice); and sharing (preaching and promotion) of impressions, understanding and experiences; go hand in hand!
We tend to preach and promote more; because we share a common dream with the whole world; the dream of global welfare. This is called (VISHVACHE ARTA by Saint Dnyaneshvar). But we rarely identify it; and unknowingly are charged and possessed by it according to our predisposition and capability.
Some of us get satisfied with ad hoc (incomplete, superficial and symptomatic) solutions; and enter political, social, commercial, artistic, academic, industrial, agricultural, philanthropic careers.
Some are not satisfied with ad hoc solutions; and try to go deeper to realize the dream of universal welfare.
Out of these; some get lost into the fleeting ideologies, unrealistic concepts and self deception. They come to terms with the deception and in turn; deceive people under the guise of political revolution, spiritual renaissance, sat yug and so on!
While remaining few; try to go to the roots of the problems for realizing the dream of global unity and harmony; with holistic perspective. They almost reach holistic solutions in terms of universal perspective, policies, plans and actions. The most important common factor amongst them is the indescribable bond of blossoming together.
NAMASMARAN is found to be the eternal source of holistic solutions; and in NAMASMARAN; there is an experience of the whole universe coming closer. Due to this experience; people cannot resist themselves from preaching and promoting NAMASMARAN; in every possible way; as a matter of greatest privilege, golden opportunity.
But still; it must be clarified here; that the practice of NAMASMARAN is far more real, vital, crucial to us; and the welfare of universe; than preaching and promotion.
The practice however; at times can be tiring; and hence the next best thing to do is; preaching and promotion.
In view of the overwhelming dark forces; the preaching and promotion are very much needed; so as to inform and inspire (not coax) maximum people; for the inner blossoming through NAMASMARAN. However; if we do not practice, then we are likely not to blossom from within and not get the objective experience of universal benevolence (BHAKTI); and hence indulge in loud propaganda, gaudy advertisements and create aversion and repulsion about NAMASMSRAN!

STRESS AND PRACTICE OF NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS
KASHALIKAR
Introduction
Namasmaran means remembering the name of Almighty or God that actually implies true Self. It is accepted and practiced in most religions in different forms. It has the potential to help us rise and blossom to cosmic consciousness and universal unity, which is the essence of Total Stress Management.
Steps
The first thing is provisional acceptance of the concept. Hostility or submission is not conducive to build conviction based on sound foundation.
Reading the books on Namasmaran; gives us the idea about the simplicity of the process and also why people start it and also give it up rather too quickly!
Selecting a place, a particular suitable time and a suitable position and starting to remember any name of God we are familiar with, belongs to our tradition or religion, or simply we have reverence about.
Practicing this way for five minutes every day
Continuing without expecting anything miraculous as initially we experience restlessness and feeling of wastage of time; because we are used to think, feel and move unknowingly and mechanically in response to external and internal influences. Hence Namasmaran, during which this thinking, feeling and moving activity is absent; makes us suffocated, empty or useless.
Gradually we will get over this phase and enter into the realm free of the shackles of subjectivity, superficiality and pettiness.
We will then feel like sharing our experiences selflessly with others. We may happily do it but without discontinuing our Namasmaran.
Namasmaran is simple, inexpensive, does not require any gadgets, does not require any change in culture, does not have any glamour and glitter, does not give any tangible gains and hence usually quickly started but then also quickly given up. Hence we have to persist on Namasmaran irrespective of anything --- because Namasmaran takes us beyond everything tangible i.e. towards ultimate freedom.
Tips
Namasmaran is done quietly or by audible pronunciation of the name.
Namasmaran can be done with or without a rosary.
Namasmaran can be done in any physical and physiological condition and anywhere in any situation.
There is no restriction on anything or rather there is no prerequisite for Namasmaran hence nothing (type of food, alcohol, tobacco, race, religion, caste etc) come in the way of starting the practice of Namasmaran.
Detractors of Namasmaran may humiliate or try to dissuade. But through Namasmaran we would learn how to overcome criticism and ridicule; without getting perturbed.
The gains of Namasmaran are completely intangible. Hence it is preferable not to preach anyone (though sharing is fine) or insist any one about Namasmaran.
In the course of time we would get increasingly involved in Namasmaran and begin to practice it for longer time and whenever we get the opportunity. This is an indication of an improvement and blossoming!
Later we would experience lack of hatred, lack prejudice, lack of fear, lack of worries and greater and greater buoyancy.
The addictions and negative thoughts usually reduce one's self esteem and create self doubt and deter one from namasmaran. Hence it is said that irrespective of how you are; start and persist on the practice of namasmaran (jaap or Jap). Practice of namasmaran itself clears the doubts and deterrent negative thoughts and develops the necessary conviction.
Warning
There is no warning with respect to Namasmaran, which is also called jaap, jap or jikra.
