VIOLENCE AND NONVIOLENCE: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
KILLING
Killing is not a homogenous phenomenon. Killing of different species such as viruses, ricketssiae, fungi, protozoa, mosquitoes, cockroaches, hens, cocks, goats, sheep, pigs, cows, buffalos, monkeys and human beings is not the same thing.
Killing to protect a species such mankind from epidemics and pandemics, killing to protect oneself from death and disease, killing to eat and survive, killing to prepare utilities such as warm clothes to survive, killing to extract medicinal material, killing to prepare delicacies for gustatory pleasure (pampering one's taste), killing to prepare fashionable items for showcasing, or show off, killing for petty personal gains such as profit, killing to extract so called aphrodisiacs (sexual stimulants); and killing just for the sake of killing (and brutal gratification) are different.
INDISCRIMINATE KILLING AND INDISCRIMINATE OPPOSITON TO IT
These are like short circuiting. They manifest through an individual due to inappropriate communication through nerve impulses (energy flow); from and towards the brain. These usually result from extreme subjective and subcortical responses. Indiscriminate violence towards others or towards self is detrimental to; inner and outer; and individual and global blossoming.
Indiscriminate nonviolence e.g. not killing the mosquitoes, virulent bacteria, rabid dogs etc. is equally counterproductive and hindrance to inner and outer prosperity and profundity.
Therefore, “indiscriminate violence and nonviolence” in the form of impulsive or planned activity (perspective, policy, program); by individuals, groups or governments; is neither conducive nor justifiable, for the welfare of a person or mankind.
The globally benevolent perceptions, emotions, passions, instincts and personal and social actions are and should be; aimed at rectification of impulsive, mean, cruel or stupid and hence “indiscriminate violent or indiscriminate nonviolent” concepts and practices (by gullible kindness and cunning wickedness); hazardous to universal emancipation.
Thus “indiscriminate violence” in the form of exploitation, repression, fanaticism, terrorism, cheating and torture; of innocent people; and the massive propaganda of the “indiscriminate nonviolence”; go on incessantly and hand in hand!
They are supported by genuinely kind but unwise proponents of “indiscriminate nonviolence” who unknowingly accept and subject themselves to indiscriminate violence!
Thus “indiscriminate violence” multiplies exponentially because “justifiable and essential therapeutic violence” against such “indiscriminate violence”; is paralyzed by the hypocritical preaching or gullible propaganda of “indiscriminate nonviolence”!
It is important to understand urgently that “destruction of diseased cells benefits the diseased patient for recovery to health and hence the global conscience must rise against concepts and practices of “indiscriminate violence” and “indiscriminate nonviolence” (both being harmful to blossoming of mankind). It is urgent to employ wherever necessary, “a well meaning globally beneficial, surgically skilled, appropriate, disciplinary, corrective and “nonviolent violence” to effectively and rapidly curb the indiscriminate violence and indiscriminate nonviolence towards self and others by state agencies and non state entities.
This is essential for creating a world where even this sort of “therapeutic and nonviolent violence”; would not be required.
NAMASMARAN enable us to acquire this enlightened wisdom and overcome indiscriminate, unwise, unjust and suicidal conception and practice of indiscriminate violence and indiscriminate nonviolence!
VIOLENCE AND GITA
The use of the word “YUDDHA” i.e. war has lead to many misconceptions about Gita. One of them is that; Gita advocates violence.
It is because of our intellectual, conceptual and emotional bankruptcy that we are unable to understand that; the meaning of “death” is forgetting one’s self; and any activity in personal and social life conducive to such forgetting of one’s true self, is violence and ADHARMA.
The word “PRANASHYATI” is used in 6th chapter, 9th chapter and also 18th chapter to clearly indicate that forgetting one’s true self is death.
True violence is intellectual, emotional, instinctual and physical action conducive to forgetting one’s true self, which involves “forgetting” one’s father, mother, brother, sister, teacher, friend, society and so on. This; as everyone knows; is associated with overtly mean, individualistic and ungrateful behavior which is violence!
Gita asks us to remember and focus on our true self so that our behavior remains oriented to self realization. This is called YOGA in Gita and is called ANUSANDHAN in other spiritual parlance.
This focusing and remaining oriented is not easy. There are many detractors within and outside forcing oneself and the others to forget the true self (violence and ADHARMA), which come in the way of self realization; and consequent socially beneficial behavior!
Gita advocates participating in the war against such violence and ADHARMA.
Namasmaran reorients us to our true selves. It empowers us to fulfill our role in any given situation in an accurate and satisfactory manner to defeat true violence i.e. forgetting true self (ADHARMA) and promote; true nonviolence i.e. reorientation to true self (DHARMA). This is called DHARMYA YUDDHA (not DHARMA YUDDHA) in Gita.

STRESS AND MEDIA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
Media are analogous to the visual apparatus in the body of the human society. In Marathi and Sanskrit this is called SAMAJPURUSHA. The media personnel are analogous to the nerves in the visual apparatus. These nerves and visual apparatus; are conduits of the information.
Today; the visual apparatus; like many other organs of the SAMAJPURUSHA; is getting decomposed!
The media (and also those in advertisement, movies, TV serials, sports and politics) is going through a “Curse in Disguise”. This curse brings more money, more fame, more glamour, more popularity and more power; and bloats the ego and erodes from within! The information; then becomes self centered, self righteous and hence, eluding and misguiding.
It is said; that if a vast majority in the world; including the media personnel; exercises its right and privilege to practice NAMASMARAN; according its particular beliefs and traditions, then the conscience of the SAMAJPURUSHA would be rejuvenated to function optimally and the visual apparatus and the nerves would also be regenerated to bring in appropriate information.
NAMASMARAN is simple means. But it is only fair if we don’t take a casual approach and believe or disbelieve in it. To verify its scope and potentials; we have to study and practice it; objectively and selflessly. But objectivity and selflessness also blossom; through the practice of NAMASMARAN!

STRESS AND RITUALS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
The life is full of periodic cycles of events and incidences; causing destruction and formation. In body these cycles are in the form of anabolism, catabolism, apoptosis (timed cell death) and regeneration, increase and decrease in secretion of hormones and neurohormones and the activity of nervous system.
These are inseparable from stress due to the internal and external environments!
The rituals in Hindu Dharma are basically and essentially aimed at overcoming the degenerative and destructive forces and negative feelings inside and outside. They are aimed at blossoming of an individual and mankind. Moreover; the rituals embody an extremely subtle and holistic insight in the functioning individual and universal existence and life.
Even as it is true that some rituals can become redundant and/or cause strife amongst different religions and become harmful to society or environment and animals; the opposition to them in general; is due to cynicism, inertia, lassitude, depression, mania, individualistic traits, selfishness, miserly attitude.
In personal and social life; we go through stress; and hence we try to rejuvenate our spirit through festivals, which constitute one of the powerful ways of stress busting!
The activities in life including rituals and festivals; are associated with coordination, aggregation, synchronization, periodicity; as per the need of body and mind.
In Hindu Dharma, some rituals are called SAMSKARA and are performed to catalyze the transcendental evolution, without denying the biological needs of individuals and the society e.g. marriage. The rituals to be performed every day and at specific times are called NITYA KARMA e.g. bath. The rituals to be performed on specific occasions are called NAIMITTIC KARMA e.g. rites performed for the departed souls.
In addition; there are celebrations and festivals to reiterate the victory of progressive and enlightening forces and elements inside and outside; and are called UTSAV or SANA e.g. Diwali and Navarathra. These UTSAVS in the families and the society repeat with great grandeur and enthusiasm from generations to generations. They exemplify the vibrant cohesiveness and harmonious cooperation amongst millions of people!
The manifestation of festivals constitutes the expression of the innate urge of the human genius to reach the pinnacle of perfection i.e. unity, harmony and blossoming of one and all!
This is only superficial appreciation of rituals. If they are studied further; we can see their essence; with greater clarity and enjoy the wisdom and magnanimity within we the mankind and our ancestors!
In absence of this insight; the rituals may be practiced in a mechanical, arbitrary, vulgar and mercenary; and hence redundant, wasteful or actually harmful manner. Alternatively; they may be opposed indiscriminately and bitterly because of individualistic, ethnocentric, idiosyncratic, superficial and materialistic considerations and cynicism.
Practice of NAMASMARAN enables us to appreciate such subtler realities in our life and makes life eternally blissful!
BUT WHAT IS NAMASMARAN?
Namasmaran usually embodies; remembering the name of God, Guru, great souls; such as prophets and whatever is considered as holy e.g. planets and stars. It is remembered silently, loudly, along with music, dance, along with breathing, in group or alone. Further, NAMASMARAN is either counted by some means such as fingers, rosary (called SMARANI or JAPAMALA), or electronic counter; or practiced without counting. The traditions vary from region to region and from religion to religion.
However the universal principle underlying
NAMASMARAN is to reorient our physiological and social being; with our true self and establish and strengthen the bond between; our physiological and social being; with our true self; and finally reunification or merger with our true self!
Individual consciousness is the culmination of every activity in life. NAMASMARAN is the pinnacle of or culmination of individual consciousness and the final common pathway; to objective or cosmic consciousness. Thus we get funneled into or unified with our true self (objective or cosmic consciousness)!
Thus NAMASMARAN is in fact the YOGA of YOGA in the sense; that it is the culmination of consciousness associated with every possible procedure and technique in the yoga that we are familiar with.
It is the YOGA of YOGA; also because; it is the culmination of consciousness associated with all the activities in the universe!
It is YOGA of YOGA because everybody in the world irrespective of his/her tradition and the beliefs; would eventually, ultimately and naturally reach it; in the process of liberation. Even so called non believers also would not “miss” the “benefit of NAMASMARAN as they may remember true self through one symbol or another”!
Just as NAMASMARAN is YOGA of YOGA it is meditation of meditation also! This is because the natural and ultimate climax of every form of meditation; is remembering true self or merging with cosmic consciousness effortlessly!
These facts however have to be realized with persistent practice of NAMSMARAN and not blindly believed or blindly disbelieved with casual approach!
In short NAMSMARAN is a super-bounty of cosmic consciousness for every individual to realize it (cosmic consciousness)! This is truly a super-bounty because a person, who experiences it, rises above mercenary, commercial and even professional and charity planes and manifests super- transactions in his or her life!
These are just few observations to give rough idea about what is NAMASMARAN. NAMASMARAN is an ocean of bliss. Its true meaning is beyond description in words and has to be experienced, not by one or few persons sporadically; but most preferably, by billions!
One is said to achieve ANUSANDHAN, which is a state of ultimate freedom; or being connected with true self; remembered through the name of God as inspired by the Guru (NAMASMARAN); in traditional practice. It is beyond all subjective considerations and pursuits; and has benevolent effect of facilitating ANUSANDHAN; on the entire universe!
The last point is; NAMASMARAN is being practiced by billions even now. But even though all of them may not be enlightened instantly; at least; some of them would certainly be enlightened and empowered to evolve, guide and consolidate the global conscience and thereby manifest global unity, harmony and justice; through holistic policies!

STRESS AND WALKING: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

STRESS AND WALKING: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
One of the major causes of STRESS; is confinement to one place and restriction on mobility. Most of us; especially the shopkeepers, clerks, typists, accountants; and most importantly the students and teachers; in nurseries, kindergarten schools, primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities; are involved in sedentary work. They suffer from what is called HYPOKINETIC STRESS.
Locomotion is an inseparable, inevitable and essential characteristic of most species. But in human beings this characteristic has almost been abandoned and is replaced by mechanization, mechanized motion, automation and automated motion!
Most of the time; we, who live sedentary life; are sitting on ground or in chairs; and our legs are idle, neither supporting nor balancing our body. They either hang from the chairs passively or are resting on the footrest under the table. Sometimes we are merely standing if we work as peons.
This sedentary life style causes of HYPOKINETIC STRESS. HYPOKINETIC STRESS causes; either development or aggravation; of several ailments. It is not necessary to go into the details of these ailments. But some of them; such as ischemic heart diseases, diabetes mellitus, varicose veins, hernia, low body resistance; are obvious.
ADVANTAGES OF WALKING AS A STRESS BUSTER AND IN HOLISTIC HEALTH PROMOTION
Walking is being one with; our “basic biological specie identity”. Just as locomotion is natural as well as essential for the survival in case of most animals and birds, it is natural for all of us also. Though it is not essential for survival; in view of the availability of sex, food, protection etc. without locomotion; it is essential for the Total Stress Management and Holistic Health.
Walking involves synchronous activation and inhibition of general sensory and general motor neurons in the nervous system and thereby also a variety of muscle groups.
This has two major effects. The prefrontal cortex and limbic system involved in activity of intellect and emotions and characterized by reverberating circuits associated with confusion, dilemmas, diffidence, inertia, indecision, anxiety etc; are kept in abeyance.
Hence walking alleviates the anxiety. Walking is solacing because of its synchronizing influence on the brain and mind.
In addition; it has the same beneficial effect of exercise, of producing endorphins and cooling the mind.
Walking is associated with contraction of the lower extremities, which help in returning of the blood from the lower parts to the heart. This prevents development of varicose veins and reduces load on the heart. Since pumping activity of the heart is reduced the possibility of heart failure is reduced.
As a byproduct of improved venous return, the lungs are perfused better and ventilation is not wasted or in other words, oxygenation is improved. Lungs become healthier and body becomes far more energetic.
Walking is associated with, associated movement of arms and neck and hence the possibility of degenerative changes in these regions causing spondylosis and frozen shoulder; are reduced.
Gradual and supported walking helps the patients of Parkinsonism, paraplegia, hemiplegia etc to gain confidence (which is vital for early recovery).
Even the senior citizens are benefited in terms of being able to assert their physical stamina.
Walking is useful as form meditation called GAMANA (walking) VIPASYANA (meditation). Those who like to recite the name of God (NAMASMARAN) or those, who like to recite prayers; can do so while walking. By practice; is possible to synchronize NAMASMARAN, with footsteps, which can be made synchronous with inhalation and exhalation; and the relaxation and contraction of abdominal muscles.
Walking nullifies (or at least reduces it; as in children; mere walking is not sufficient; but running, jumping etc are required); HYPOKINETIC STRESS; which is especially produced cities where we have to spend our life in “matchbox prisons”! But this is also true in villages; in case of sedentary population.
Walking gives us the opportunity to breathe at least some fresh air; which is so rare in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Calcutta, Delhi etc.
While walking we get breeze which is important from the VIHAR point of view in Ayurveda and giving the body air element from the point of view of naturopathy. In fact, walking provides, TEJA (sun), VAYU (air) and AKASH (space) and thus fulfilling naturopathic requirements excepting mud and water.
From allopathic point of view; air, sun and space stimulate millions of receptors; on the skin and also inside the body (as the circulation inside; also increases). They cause overall rejuvenation of the nervous system; and thereby other systems including circulatory and respiratory systems.
Like any other exercise is associated with an increase in circulation, respiration, sweating and excretion of toxins and thus it helps the kidney by reducing load over it.
Walking is important for healthy sweating. Sweat is antiseptic and protects the skin from bacteria and many other germs. In addition; sweat actually washes away the obnoxious collections on the skin also. Sweating is important in thermo-regulation.
It is my theory; that excretion of sweat; by skin is one of the major support to the excretory and homeostatic function of the kidney. The burden of the kidney is remarkably and significantly reduced because of sweating and walking. This is an important role of walking in preventing deterioration of kidney function. This has to be verified by the history of walking in patients with reduced kidney function.
Because of increased blood supply to skin; presumably; the healing and prevention of chronic skin ulcers is achieved.
Due to increase in the blood supply to mucus membranes; and stimulation of the production of mucus; the cleaning of the nasopharynx, sinuses and lungs; can be helped. Similarly; due to increased production of mucus; prevention and/or healing of ulcers in the stomach can also be helped.
Besides, skin converts the bilirubin into lumirubin, which is excreted in sweat. This is important additional and alternative way of excretion of bilirubin and would certainly reduce the load on liver. How much this has therapeutic and preventive value in liver diseases has to be studied.
Walking obviously reduces blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides; as it stimulates metabolic (anabolic activity).
Walking in morning; gives exposure to sun and this is good for natural supplement of vitamin D from the UV rays in the sunlight.
Regular walking gives us rest and freedom from many obsessions, compulsions and preoccupations; which we impose on ourselves.
Walking almost certainly ensures sound sleep, which is one of the important aspects of health.
If we are walking alone and recite either some MANTRA or the name of God, then as we are not talking mundane matters we can gain most virtuous fruit of Maunam i.e. observance of silence.
This is called MANAS TAPA in Geeta (17.16.). This also helps in avoiding backbiting, abusing etc. and thereby helps in purifying one’s speech. This is called VAACHAA SHUDDHI. Actually this helps in purifying the thoughts also.
Walking alone (without company); gives confidence and fearlessness by helping us to overcome the fears developed as a result of paranoia; found in many of us developed as a result of some physical or psychological trauma.
Not merely the medical problems are reduced and the safety is increased, but medical bills are also reduced. In addition obesity related food, (overeating), clothes (excess size) and perfumes are also reduced. This economic aspect of walking is also interesting.
From social point of view; deep and selfless bonds of love are developed amongst walkers.
Like walking; climbing staircase also helps in improvement of physical health and also in reducing the consumption of electricity.
Climbing also avoids being in a crowded closed place that causes and facilitates spread of infections.
In Sanskrit it is said
BHUNKTWA UPAVISHATAH STHOULYAM SHAYANAH CHA RUJAH TATHA
AYUH CHAKRAMANAH CHA
MRUTYUH DHAVATI DHAVATAH
It means;
After eating if you sit then you become obese, if you sleep, then you become diseased, if you walk then you live a long (and healthy) life and if you run then you invite death!
Walking; acclaimed; as the best exercise; by Mahatma Gandhi; is thus; a great STRESS BUSTER and rejuvenator of the physical, mental, social, economic; and if we combine it with NAMASMARAN; then spiritual health! Walking to offices; when possible and feasible; reduces the STRESS of waiting for a vehicle. It reduces; the crowding, traffic jam and pollution caused by the vehicles on the road! It saves the fuel consumption as well!

STRESS AND POLITICS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
The news on TV showing; significant increase in stress due to poverty, unemployment and cut throat competition; confirms that; we can never succeed in Total Stress Management; without addressing the socioeconomic, political and other issues influencing our lives.
We have to firmly assert our conscience, personal, socioeconomic, political and other issues. If we don’t, then we will suffer from the wide spread stressors on the one hand; and from the biting by our own conscience; on the other!
For Total Stress Management; assertion of our conscience is of paramount importance. For this; we must learn to build the socioeconomic and political organizations; on the basis of holistic perspective, policies, plans and programs; by leading or following as per our capacity.
The enlightened and immortal leaders of mankind say; that; if we practice NAMASMARAN, we would grow objective and selfless and would be empowered to overcome short term gains and temptations; at the cost of majority!
This would strengthen and heal the ailing democracy and elections; and we would be able to guide and/or at least follow; the holistic ideas in different fields; in a manner; benevolent to the whole world and all the species!
