 Introduction

hair transplant is a technique of getting hair on the bald scalp. It is required when a male/female is experiencing balding patterns, sudden hair loss due to medical conditions or accidents etc.

The transplantation technique involves the removal of a small or large piece of hair scalp. The piece of hair scalp is taken from the donor area and cut into small pieces, and used as a graft. The grafts are then placed on the thinning area of the scalp. The grafts are of different shapes and sizes. The graft has the amount of hair according to its size and shape.

  • Round shaped graft contains 10-15 hairs.
  • Mini-graft contains 2-4 hairs.
  • Micro-graft contains 1-2 hairs.
  • Long and thin stripped grafts contain 30-40 hairs
  • Slit grafts contain 4-10 hairs each

Types of hair transplant

There are three procedures for hair transplant

  • FUE transplant
  • FUT transplant
  • PRP transplant

Complications associated with hair transplant

Hair transplant surgery usually has minor side effects. The side effects can be cleared up within a few weeks. Side effects such as

  • Scalp infection
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling of the scalp
  • Bruising under the eyes
  • Formation of crust at the site of removal or implantation
  • The feeling of numbness in the area of transplant
  • Itching
  • Folliculitis is a condition of inflammation or infection of the scalp
  • The unnatural appearance of hairs

Steps involved in hair transplant

Step 1. Preparing for the hair transplant

Preparation includes noticing the area of hair loss and healthy hair growth areas, which are usually the back and sides of the head. It also involves removing and relocating hair follicles to the bald area.

Step 2. Trimming of the donor area

The donor area is trimmed before the hair transplant surgery.

Step 3. Preparing donor area

The donor area preparation includes the administration of the donor area after trimming.

Step 4. Tissue removal and suturing of the donor area

The tissues of the donor that contain resistant hair follicles are removed, and then the donor area is sutured.

Step 5. Combing the hair over the sutured donor area

The hairs are combed over the sutures in the donor area. The sutures tend to remove after ten days of hair transplant surgery.

Step 6. Formation of follicular unit grafts

The donor tissue is trimmed and forms into follicular unit grafts. To dissect and prepare follicular unit hair grafts, microscopes are used.

Step 7. Preparation of bald recipient area

The bald recipient area is prepared by administering local anaesthesia for the surgical processes.

Step 8. Creating incisions in balding areas

Tiny incisions were made on the recipientarea, and follicular unit grafts were then placed.

Step 9. Placing grafts according to their densities

The small or less dense graft is placed in front of the hairline, while a denser graft is placed behind the hairline.

Step 10. After transplant surgery

The incisions with short hair will be visible in the area of the surgery.

Step 11. Closing of the transplantation surgery

After closing the surgery, the marks will heal naturally and vanish redness within a week.

Other techniques for transplant

Tissue expansion

Tissue expansion is another technique to treat baldness. It is reconstructive surgery to repair burn wounds. The result of plastic surgery gives dramatic results in a short period.
The technique includes a balloon-like device inserted beneath the hair-bearing scalp called a tissue expander.

Flap surgery

Flap surgery has been a trusted procedure for more than 20 years. It is a customizable procedure for each patient. The flap technique is more efficient than the graft technique. One flap is worked as 350 or more grafts.

The procedure includes the cutting of a section of bald scalp. And placing the hair-bearing flap into new positions.

Scalp reduction

Scalp reduction is an advanced technique of flap technique. It covers the bald areas of the top and back of the head. The procedure starts with injecting the local anaesthesia to remove the segment of the bald scalp. The cutout segment was then closed with the stitches to provide strong tugging at the point.
