A petition in Canada seeks a National AIDS Strategy, according to a statement from Elizabeth May, member of the Canadian parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands and leader of the Green Party of Canada. She is hosting the petition on her website.

The petition calls on the House of Commons to implement a National AIDS Strategy based on the principle of treatment as prevention (TasP), which shows that effective HIV treatment also prevents transmission of the virus.

In addition to implementing TasP, the strategy also seeks to expand access to HIV testing and treatment across Canada, especially among First Nations people living on reserves and Canadians in remote communities.

The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) requires countries receiving PEPFAR funds to have such strategies. However, the United States did not release its own National HIV/AIDS Strategy until 2010.
