Crash Course on Uro-oncology

Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH), Nadiad organised a 3-day Crash Course on Uro-oncology during 3rd to 5th September 2009.   It was held at the Jayaramdas Patel Academic Centre (JPAC) attached to the hospital.  The aim was to get in depth knowledge of urological cancers.  The Course was intended to give complete orientation towards the basics of urological cancers, clinical presentations, treatment algorithms, international guidelines and what lies in future.  On day 1, Kidney, Adrenal and Wilms’ tumor topics were covered, whereas on day 2 and 3, Prostate and Bladder, and Testis and Penile topics, respectively, were taken up.

Uro-oncology has become an independent sub-specialty in most part of the world.  In India we do not have separate sub-specialty, but we do have some dedicated Oncologists.    The Crash Course was focused mainly on the post graduates and recently passed Urologists to get them interested in it as a career.  Dr. Makarand Khochikar, who was the Course Director, has been conducting Instruction Course on Uro oncology  at MPUH Nadiad for the last 4 years.  Besides Dr. Khochikar, the national faculty included Dr. Mahesh Desai, Chairman, Department of Urology, Dr. R B Sabnis, Vice-Chairman, Department of Urology at the MPUH, and Dr. B Kashyapi.

The module was designed in a unique fashion.  It started with case studies that covered each and every aspect of the diagnosis, investigations, treatment algorithm of a urological cancer.  Video demonstration of each and every uro-oncological procedure were shown.  At the end of the case studies, there was a didactic overview of the urological cancer covering theory and practical aspects.  Controversies were deliberated with high quality debates on various topics.

Uro-oncology has undergone tremendous changes in the last few years.  The Course was intended for Practicing Urologists who wish to refresh their knowledge of urological cancers; Consultant Urologists who wish to pursue career in uro-oncology; DNB and MCh Urology Trainees, and oncological trainees who desired orientation towards urological cancers.
