MULJIBHAI PATEL UROLOGICAL HOSPITAL, NADIAD

A new department, Rohit J Patel Department of Uro Oncology, was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of Health, Government of Gujarat, Mr. Jaynarayan Vyas, at the Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH), Nadiad on Monday evening.  The department has been set up at a cost of Rs.50 million.

After inaugurating the new department, while addressing the delegates participating in the 3-day Symposium on ‘Expanding the Horizons of Indian Uro Oncology; Trustees, Doctors and Staff of MPUH, and other dignitaries at the JPAC auditorium, the Minister welcomed the addition of an exclusive department of Uro Oncology at MPUH.  He expressed happiness over the growth and development of MPUH as an institution of excellence. He offered all help in the activities of MPUH.  He said that Gujarat is already in the forefront of medical education and healthcare, and envisioned the emergence of Gujarat as a prime destination for medical tourism.

Dr. Mark Soloway, who is an icon in genito-urinary oncology, in his key note speech said that urology is a broad area, and there is a need for developing uro oncology as a sub-specialty.  It requires specialized training in surgery and technical aspects.  Data base development is also an important requirement.

Addressing the audience, Shri Rohit J Patel, Chairman, MPUH said that today is a red letter day in the history of MPUH.  He recalled that 32 years ago, his father Shri Jayaramdas Patel started this Urological Hospital in memory of his revered father, Shri Muljibhai Patel. He had only one vision – to set up a not-for-profit kidney hospital to deliver the best medical treatment to any patient, under one roof, irrespective of his economic condition.  He said that he is glad that his father’s dream, coupled with Dr. Virendra Desai’s initiative, to deliver the best urological treatment in the world to patients at MPUH, has been fulfilled.

Mr. Rohit Patel observed that while cancer is a dreaded disease, genito urinary cancer is the largest group of cancer affecting mankind. Unfortunately in India they are diagnosed late and therefore nothing much can be done.  Amongst our patients, we have observed that 12% have malignancies in kidney, bladder and prostate. As life expectancy of Indian population is increasing, more cancer would be detected. Hence it was felt necessary to open a full-fledged Uro-Oncology at MPUH.  Mr. Rohit Patel thanked Dr. Inderbir Gill and Dr. Mihir Desai for helping MPUH to develop the expertise in laparoscopic surgery.

He thanked Mr. Jaynarayan Vyas for accepting our invitation to inaugurate the new department. He also thanked Dr.Mark Soloway for delivering the key note address

In his address, Dr. Mahesh Desai, Managing Trustee and Head of Urology at MPUH said that MPH was conceived with the idea that ‘Every Life Deserves World Class Care’ (“Darek Vyakti Dhuniyani Utkrusht Sarvarne Pathra che”).   He said that he is proud of the fact that people of Gujarat have always supported needy patients financially.   He was also happy that from time to time we have been getting support from Gujarat Chief Minister’s fund.  He said that there is a significant difference in our cancer management because of socio economical condition of the region.  Unfortunately our patients come late and nothing significant can be done regarding the survival and quality life of the patient.  Our effort is to diagnose cancer early so that we can carry out curative treatment.   This needs patient awareness and development of the infrastructure.   We are going to address these issues by various diagnostic camps and our hospital is already equipping itself with infrastructural development. He thanked the entire International and National faculties for taking part in this deliberation and strengthening our hand for this noble cause.

Dr. Maheshbhai said that we also need expert oncology trained nurses. It has been proved, especially in the bladder cancer, the mortality decreases depending upon the post operative nursing support.  MPUH has been trying to start post graduate training program for Nurses.  The Minister welcomed this and said that it will not take more than ten days’ time for Government approval.

Dr. M M Rajapurkar, Medical Director and Head of Nephrology, gave vote of thanks.
