Anger Management
Anger Management

People get angry for many reasons. Feeling hurt, guilty, insecure, powerless or betrayed are just few of the underlying causes of anger. While anger may be a natural and healthy response to a given situation, holding on to it is not. It can lead to host of psychological and physical ailments, not the least of which is depression.

Anger is a powerful emotion and serves as a mask of other feelings, feelings that you would rather not examine and acknowledge. Thoughts such as inferiority or depression are less likely to surface when you are angry.

Anger may offer you a sense of identity. You need to have something to believe in, something to stand up for. Anger gives you something to feel and generates a passion for something. acy, guilt

You may believe that you need anger and a feeling of being fed up to give you impetus to take action and make changes in your life. You want to generate enough pain in order to motivate to make a change in your life.

It is the only way you believe people will listen to you or respect you. If you do not get angry, others may think that you don’t really care enough or not really serious. Examine whether your anger masks other feelings.

Anger finds it root in fear. It is impossible to be angry without first being afraid. Investigate the source of your fear. Look at it and examine it objectively. Awareness is a powerful weapon.

Once you understand the reason for anger, it loosens its grip on you.

Passion, strength and conviction are admirable qualities indeed. Channel the fire and intensity of your anger intelligently so that people respect you don’t fear you. Harsh, blustery words are not the only way to get people listen – infact every one knows bullies are coward at heart.

Show that you are in control of your actions, and cognizant of their effects. Identify with strength, passion, and courage not with anger. Learn the difference between aggressiveness and assertiveness. Learn what has made the world leaders so great and study the qualities of the people around you whom you admire most.

Relaxation

Breathe deeply, from your diaphragm; breathing from your chest won't relax you. Picture your breath coming up from your "gut."

Slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as "relax," "take it easy." Repeat it to yourself while breathing deeply.

Use imagery; visualize a relaxing experience, from either your memory or your imagination.

Learn to use them automatically when you are in a tense situation.

THREE POINTS AND NAMASMARAN
First point is: In spiritualism we often hear people preaching that you have to forget yourself in memory of God.

Prima facie this appears to be a horrible idea of complete amnesia or dementia.

The first reaction to such preaching is aversion towards spiritualism. In fact if you are honest and realistic, about genuine personal and social issues, then you develop loathe and disgust about spiritualism.

Those who preach this obviously do not seem to have forgotten themselves or even their petty interests, in memory of God.

Actually; forgetting yourself in memory of God means; being able to get freed from the nagging and harrowing shackles of individualistic or subjective ideas and feelings. NAMASMARAN helps you to gradually get freed from the harassing and obsessive reminders of your own subjective ideas and feelings.

Second point: In spiritualism it is often insisted to the extent of coaxing that you have to give up everything and renounce all the relationships and excepting the one with God.

This also is obviously shocking and repulsive as it induces hatred about all sublime and adorable relationships.

What it actually means is; you acquire the capacity to see every relationship more objectively in the course of time; due to being focused on God i.e. beyond petty self through the practice of NAMASMARAN. As a result; your emotional bonds in all relationships evolve and become mature, subtler and refined.

It is important to understand that of subjective ideas and feelings (memory of petty self) and subjective perceptions about the relatives, friends etc (relationships) should get evolved as a result and NAMASMARAN.

Arbitrarily trying to “forget yourself” or “cut off relations” can be harmful for a common person like me.

One can think over and decide whether to practice or not NAMSMARAN.

The third point: In spiritualism there is a philosophical depiction of reality of different philosophers with different perspectives.

This can be really very harsh on budding minds (if inadvertantly imposed) and induce a knid of cnflicting process in them.

For example when a boy sees the world and comprehends it in a particular way, it is counterproductive for the boy to assume that contrary to his perception is correct (e.g. Brahma Satyam Jagat Mithya) and his perception is wrong!

It is essential to understand that philosophy provides answers to certain questions. Understanding the answers can provide you 50 percent satisfaction and conviction. But remaining 50 per cent clarity comes only through experience.

In life it is always good to ask questions, seek answers and verify the answers on the basis of one’s experiences.

The efforts one must take for one’s evolution to internalize and comprehend experiences are called SADHANA.

In as much as it is wrong to try to blindly forsake your ideas, because some philosophy preaches it, it is also wrong to condemns the answers provided by the philosophy without practicing the SADHANA with some patience; of course similar patience required in any scientific experiment.

NAMASMARAN is one of such globally prevalent SADHANA.

DHARMA AND COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS
The microcosmic and macrocosmic manifestations of movements, colors, sounds, rhythms, melody, behaviors and the emotional relationships; amongst the nonliving and living forms; are intricate and subtle.

They are beyond one’s intellectual comprehension and even imagination. All that we see and even perceive; is defined and restricted by the characteristics of our sensory receptors and the limitations of cerebral cortex and hence forms a small fraction of what actually “exists” around! Actually the concept of “existence” has also been born from our physiologically limited; though cumulative framework through the civilizations. But even the fraction we perceive may or may not be in consonance with our subjective feelings. This alienation or separation from the core of the nature is the cause of inherent restlessness in most of us.

This separation; manifests in the behavior e.g. such as struggle for existence, which is directed by cruder needs. It manifests later, in struggles and wars motivated by passions, aspirations, and ambitions of asserting, possessing, controlling, and owning and so on. This separation from the core of nature also manifests at personal levels in the strong or weak prejudices and likes and dislikes leading to conflicts.

This clear vision and appreciation of the universe and its; such unfolding at all times, is a blossoming experience. On the backdrop of this orchestra individuals get freed from the subjectivity and blossom into objective existence merged with the core of nature.

Through such blossoming experience we realize that subjectivity i.e. individual differences are inevitable at most of the stages of evolution and in fact; everything in the universe plays a role (delegated to it) in accordance with its state of evolution! One can’t stop wondering about “the management” of this cosmic orchestra!

DHARMA actually means emulation of this cosmic orchestra at individual, social, global and universal levels, by identifying and performing one’s role! The greater the accuracy in emulation, the greater would the individual and the society; experience harmony and melody in universe and vice versa.

This state of identification of one’s role and its assertion marked by victory over restlessness (born out of separation from the core of nature), is implied in the preaching of saints “THEVILE ANANTE TAISECHI RAHAVE, CHITTI ASO DYAVE SAMADHAN”. It is said that it is possible to blossom into this state through NAMASMARAN. In other words, NAMASMARAN is the way to DHARMA, it is the core of DHARMA, and it is the culmination of DHARMA.

One need not merely believe; but can verify the validity of this through experimentation.

Alzheimer's and Dementia
WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY ; 21St SEPTEMBER

21st September is recognized as “World Alzheimer’s day”. It is wrong to say that this day is celebrated as “World Alzheimer’s day” because celebrations are associated for fun or good memories. In case of Alzheimer’s disease, there are sufferings hidden in the disease process. This article may help to find a ray of hope to all Alzheimer sufferers. Today we are completing 103 years to discover the Alzheimer’s disease but still there are lots of gray areas in the field in terms of understanding the cause, diagnosing it and getting proper treatment to find the solution.
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of mental disorder which affects the process of memory related functions of the brain. As on date, it is considered as incurable disease. The progress of Alzheimer’s disease is very slow but affects permanently which wipes out the process of thinking, judgmental skills and finally an affected person becomes incompetent to carry on day-to-day activities for his own survival. Most of the cases are over the age of 60 but the pathology of this disease starts 10-15 years before the symptoms are noticed. At the beginning, the symptoms are taken very casually where the seriousness is hardly known to anybody. Gradually the disease spreads in other parts of the brain which interferes with all the physiological functions of the brain.
Medically, it is recognized as gradual degeneration of the brain tissue. The disease is named based on the observations done by German psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1906. He was the first to correlate the symptoms of memory loss and the structural changes in the brain of a lady after she died. He found that the brain of the lady had tangles and a plaque made from protein fragments and the entire structure was drastically changed. It is now over 103 years after the disease is known to the medical fraternity but there is no remedy to cure it.
What is the cause?
The short answer to this question is “Not known”. There are some imaginary theories based on epidemiological data as follows:
1) Depressed individuals are more prone to Alzheimer’s disease.
2) Statins (the drugs given for cholesterol lowering) increase the incidence Alzheimer’s disease. Recent research from Prof. Yeon-Kyun Shin, Iowa State University has recently published a report on his exhaustive work on this subject.
3) It is likely that the causes include genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. A gene located on chromosome 19 is associated with late onset Alzheimer's disease.
4) Other risk factors for Alzheimer's disease include high blood pressure (hypertension), coronary artery disease, diabetes, and possibly elevated blood cholesterol.
5) Some studies have found that women have more risk for Alzheimer's disease than men.
6) Few studies have proven that Alzheimer’s disease is more prevalent in cases of previous head injuries.
7) It is also studied that Estrogen therapy after menopause triggers Alzheimer’s disease.
But these causes are completely hypothetical. There is no concrete data available to understand the real cause. Hence it is extremely difficult to adopt any precautionary measure to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease.
Since medical fraternity has hardly anything to offer for Alzheimer’s disease, caregiver plays a major role in management of such cases. Common suggestions are given to the sufferers like regular exercise, good diet, peace of mind, hygienic surroundings, pleasant atmosphere with cheerful communication etc. Practically all these recommendations are good for any individual for overall health and wellbeing. There is nothing specific attributed to Alzheimer’s disease.
What is the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease?
The shortest answer to this question is “No treatment”. According to modern medicine, when the cause is not clearly understood, how can there be a solution? Most of the diseases of infectious origin, the causative organism is detected and hence it becomes easy to find a recipe to overcome the infection. In the diseases of systemic origin, the pathophsiology is understood properly and the treatment becomes easy. In Alzheimer’s, the picture is different. The disease mechanism is unknown and hence “No treatment”. There is one drug, Donepezil which is used to treat symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in individuals with mild to moderate illness. The drug may cause small improvements in dementia for a short period of time, but donepezil does not stop the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Donepezil helps prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain, thus temporarily increasing its concentration. In doing so, it improves the thinking process by facilitating nerve impulse transmission within the brain. Diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting occur more often with the 10-mg dose than the 5-mg dosage. Other side effects are abnormal dreams, depression, drowsiness, fainting, loss of appetite, weight loss, frequent urination, arthritis, easy bruising, difficulty in sleeping, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, headache, or other pains. Donepezil is not safe as it also has interaction with many other medicines which alter its effects. Since there is no other option left, Donepezil is prescribed for Alzheimer’s. The medical field should have open doors to welcome newer ideas and safe drugs to treat this dreadful condition.
What other alternative?
Considering the patho-physiology of the disease, it is rational to think whether Ayurveda can offer something in Alzheimer’s? It is true that the disease was not mentioned in Ayurveda by this name but there many recipes mentioned to treat various kinds of mental, psychological and emotional disorders. While studying the subject, many hidden things came out which are of immense importance in managing Alzheimer’s disease. Few important references are given below to scientific thinkers.
1) Nasal medication has immediate access to the brain as it bypasses the blood brain barrier. Hence the nasal route would be the best route to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Ayurveda has mentioned very clearly that nose is the gateway to brain and diseases attributed to Central Nervous System can be successfully treated only with nasal medication. American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) has published a research paper on this concept and the conclusion is “In summary, the advantages of intranasal delivery are considerable. It is both rapid and non-invasive. It bypasses the BBB and targets the CNS, reducing systemic exposure and thus systemic side effects. Even for drugs that can cross the BBB, it can reduce systemic side effects by reducing the need for the drug to enter the systemic circulation. It does not require any modification of the therapeutic agent being delivered and should work for a wide range of drugs. Intranasal delivery may facilitate the treatment and prevention of many different neurologic and psychiatric disorders”.
S Talegaonkar, PR Mishra; Indian J Pharmacol June 2004 Vol 36 Issue 3; 140-147
2) Human brain is made of approximately 70% fat and 30% protein. Therefore it has a natural affinity towards lipids for its normal functioning. Considering references from Ayurvedic texts, cow ghee is the best available lipid and has 3 different actions on the nervous system. Acquisition, storage and recall are the 3 basic functions of the brain and cow ghee possess the properties to enhance these three fold brain functions. It is as simple to understand that water is not easily soluble to oil but another oil or ghee can easily be absorbed. Therefore water-soluble or water based drugs do not penetrate the brain easily. This concept also goes very scientifically with the research on new drug in Europe for Huntington’s disease. Huntington’s disease ("HD") is a genetic neurodegenerative disease characterized by movement disorder, dementia and psychiatric disturbance. Early symptoms might affect cognitive ability or mobility and include depression, mood swings, forgetfulness, clumsiness, involuntary twitching and lack of coordination. Later, concentration and short-tem memory diminish, and involuntary movements of the head, trunk and limbs increase. Eventually, the person is unable to care for himself or herself. Death follows from complications including choking, infection or heart failure. The drug developed for treating this is basically an Omega 3 based fatty acid, given orally and has proved quite effective. The drug is in the process of launching world-wide in a short span of time. Ayurveda has given emphasis on Cow Ghee which is also a fat, easily available and has been an household item of Indian kitchen.
3) A brain wave ‘p300’ is linked to memory and learning. The faster the rate of transmission, the brain functions more efficiently. Researchers took 26 volunteers hooked them with electrodes and checked their p300 rate. Immediately after taking the test, they were given DHA (derivative of Omega-3). Two hours later, their brain waves were measured, and this time the p300 rate was significantly faster in the group. This supports importance of lipids in the neurotransmission as well. What Ayurveda has recommended also goes very much hand in hand with this research. Therefore in Indian tradition, it is customary to put few drops of oil (the purpose is to introduce a fatty substance) during massage given since infancy period.
Myanaga, K., K. Yonemura, and K. Yazawa.
International Conference on Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids in Nutrition and Disease Prevention. 1996 Barcelona, Spain.
4. The nasal route is studied for the administration of systemically active drugs because delivery is convenient, reliable and rapid. A drug developed was administered through Nasal route and the florescent imaging showed that the absorption is 100 ± 30 % just within 1.5 minutes
Ref: Maria Dahlin and Erik Björk; Department of Pharmacy, Division of Pharmaceutics, Uppsala University, Biomedical Center, SE-751 23 Uppsala, Sweden
5. Another research from VA Medical center, San Francisco, USA which is published in the journal “Future Neurology” in 2008 says that ‘The nose may help the brain; intranasal drug delivery for treating neurological diseases.
There are end number of research papers published which give us a guideline to treat neurological diseases and which could be a breakthrough in treating Alzheimer’s disease. Not only Ayurveda but even modern research also supports the concept of treating the brain diseases through nasal route. Importance of Lipids in neurological diseases is also established by modern medicine which is evident in Ayurvedic classics. Indian traditional way of life supports the theory of using unctuous substances for lubricating the sense organs which are the sensory paths to access the central nervous system. In spite of that why do we still pursue the issue of Alzheimer’s disease?
When should one start Nasal treatment?
The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease start appearing after 10 to 15 years later after the actual pathology starts in the brain. Therefore it is extremely important to start the treatment at the age of 50.
There are many herbs proven to have phenomenal improvement in the brain at the cellular level. The well known are Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shankhapushpi (Evolvulus alsinoides), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Saffron (Crocus sativus), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) etc. Oral medicines find difficulty in reaching the brain as there is a physiological mechanism called Blood Brain Barrier which prohibits the absorption. Therefore it is practical to use these herbs in the form of nasal medication and also should be processed by special method called “Sneha - Paka - Widhi” described in Ayurveda. This will bypass the Blood Brain Barrier and allow the active herbal constituents to reach the central nervous system and arrest the progress of Alzheimer’s eventually. Besides this, the nasal medication also helps to improve vision, arrest hair fall, prevent graying of hair, improve hearing and many other diseases attributed to ENT and supra-clavicular disorders. Like synthetic drugs have side effects, Ayurvedic drugs have side benefits. Unknowingly these formulations impart some added benefits and contribute to positive health achievements.
As on date, there is no technique available to detect or forecast the Alzheimer’s disease in advance. Therefore it is safe to start such nasal medication at the age of 50 and keep fingers crossed and think positive for gaining élan health in older age. Ayurveda recommends this nasal treatment should be done daily, 4 to 6 drops in both the nostrils, preferably in the morning or evening. It is good to take a sip of warm water after introducing the drops if there is a feeling of the contents coming in the throat. Since the base is ghee, the bottle should be made warm to liquefy the contents in case it is not properly flowing.
Considering the research in modern era and viewing the verses in Ayurveda it becomes evident that Ancient science has enormous hidden potential. It is rather a golden treasury for human beings but needs to be explored and understood properly. Many times it seems that Ayurveda has given short verse with big meaning which is equivalent to one doctorate in that field. It is just like a question asked and the answer given in Ayurveda, modern research helps to find the various steps involved in getting the answer.

Elections & Health: Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar
As a result of deification of democracy, the voters and the candidates, have apparently developed an illusory feeling that elections and democracy are panacea for the cure of all evils. If not, at least we tend to pretend so.

Elections and democracy are actually the means (amongst many others such as study, analysis, experimentation, research, industry, agriculture, craft, business, art, literature, sports, rituals, festivals, conventions, prayers, various techniques of meditation etc); evolved during the development of human civilization. They are meant for ushering in the ambience that would be conducive to individual and global blossoming. They are not the end in themselves.

In as much as it is true that elections and democracy are important means, it is truer that assuming elections and the democracy as the end in themselves and neglecting the other means of global blossoming such as those mentioned above, would be naive and counterproductive.

From immediate practical point of view, isn’t it true and important that we get empowered to vote selflessly and bravely and elect benevolent candidates? Conversely isn’t it true that those who get elected evolve into able and noble individuals (if they are not at present)?

The visionaries have reiterated time and again that; NAMASMARAN i.e. remembrance of; and connection with; the true self; is the source of universally benevolent and empowering inner light. They have insisted and affirmed that it is the basis, essence and culmination of all the means; conducive to individual and global blossoming! Shouldn’t NAMASMARAN be our topmost priority before, during and after elections and irrespective of the stage of evolution of democracy?

Elections in Maharashtra are declared and the various transactions of election of peoples’ representatives have begun.

Are we truly selfish? Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar
Are We Truly Selfish?
Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

The answer to this question can emerge correctly if we ask some more questions to ourselves!

Do we practice; self introspection, self search, self exploration, self analysis and self criticism if required?

Do we suffer from self pity, self abnegation, self ridicule, self deride, self guilt and so on?

Do we have self acceptance, self respect, self realization and self appreciation?

Do we care for self propulsion, self expression, self assertion, self satisfaction etc?

The real questions are:

Do we understand what is self?
Do we understand the signals of the self; generated from within?
Do we understand the signals of the agony or the satisfaction; of the self?
Do we spend time to understand these signals and respond to them?
Are we really happy?

You may get answers by NAMASMARAN!

Three questions: Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar
Please comment if you get spare time:
==============================
We worship and adore the champions of charity. No doubt they have large hearts and give solace and support to millions.

Q. 1)
But do we ever ask, a) Do they provide radical solutions to the problems in which they work? b) Why have they to work at the mercy of government grants and public donations? c) WHy have they to work in the suppressive and oppressive framework rules and regulations?
------------------------------------------------------------
We feel proud in donating. No doubt it is commendable and admirable. Callous and petty selfishness brings misery to self and others.

Q. 2)
But do we ever rise to find out the roots of social maladies (which reside in our paradigms) that create the mammoth need for charity?
------------------------------------------------------------
We are noble hearted and well meaning gentlemen (though there may be some drawbacks or deficiencies).
Q. 3)
Can we be a part of an incessant, ongoing, global and victorious process to reach and remedy the roots of individual and social maladies?

Curse in Disguise: Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar
Curse in Disguise: Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

Just as there is “Blessing is Disguise”, there is also a thing called “Curse in Disguise”! Most of the people in businesses bringing quick money and fame; such as advertisement, movies, TV serials, and now a days even consumers, have to go through this malady of “Curse in Disguise”!

There is a systematic marketing of products to prevent and avert non-existing fear, bad look, dark skin, poverty, death and so on. There is also marketing to sell counterproductive luxury, mean excitement and dehumanizing glamour. For example, fear of ghee, coconut oil, un-iodized salt, Bengal gram, earthen pots and so on!

The insurance companies, medical businesses, cosmetic and so many other industries (including sectarian and malicious doctrines and politics) thrive on this. Many so called medical and similar associations extract a share from such looting activities.

But financial gains resulting from sick minded endeavors invariably lead to pandemic spread of dissatisfaction, disturbance, degeneration, disease and decay of individual and global life and merely bloat your ego sickeningly beyond a limit. You do not grow strong but actually get weaker and hollow from within! You tend to become self centered and self righteous! Most importantly you tend to speak anything because you are heard and your pseudo-leadership tends to elude, misguide and ditch the naďve and gullible people! Not only that, when your false glory fades you tend to bask in that past false glory and that makes you even more miserable and pitiable!

This point should be clear to consumers as well!

Most of us think that consumer interest is restricted merely to quality production, appropriate preservation, proper transportation, fair exchange and fidelity in advertising. This view point; which is supported all over the world; and enjoys moral and ethical supremacy; is not merely incorrect; but not being non-holistic it is disastrous also!

As a consumer in any given place or field, we should be aware of the needs or plights of the other consumers in the world and other fields of life. We can not be balanced, objective and holistic in the absence of such awareness. In fact such lack awareness tends to make consumer movements selfish, short sighted, and harmful to many while serving the petty interests and vested interests of few.

The major issues such as environmental protection, proper and productive education, housing, holistic health, agriculture, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, handling of droughts, famines, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, nuclear proliferation and development of harmony and brotherhood have to be involved in consumer movements! With narrow, selfish, short sighted, mean and callous perspective, of mere material financial gains and utility you seem to gain materially, but ultimately you will be the dejected loser, in every possible way.

Hence, all businesses bringing quick money and fame; such as advertisement, movies, TV serials and so on, and consumer movements, have to be coupled with perspective of global welfare (the essence of which is explained in my books) as a result of which balanced and accurate policies, plans, decisions, administrative efforts and implementation at global and local level can be evolved. Wouldn’t you like to live with choicest activity that builds your self esteem?

It is said that such buoyant and blissful life is possible with Namasmaran. One may try and verify it.
