GURUTATVA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
GURUTATVA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

We have many preferences and priorities. We have different role models. We have different individuals whom we respect. We find different idols in society. In the quest of truth we find many phenomena to adore.
Usually there is confusion and hence conflicts in our lives.

The spiritual literature usually affirms that guru is the ultimate. There is nothing beyond guru. But there are others who maintain that KULADEVATA is most important. There are many other opinions as well.

For many of us; accepting guru as the ultimate sounds difficult to accept and digest; in view of the human form of the guru. The guru (and even prophet or incarnation) in human form with though stupendous, yet limited accomplishments when compared with eternal, omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent God.

Often there is a nagging question as to whether the KULADEVATA should get preference or a guru?

While KULADEVATA is usually accessible to many Hindus; this phenomena is usually not found in many Hindus and Non-Hindus. Further, there is perennial confusion about guru; in view of their credentials and capacity to guide us to God.

For those who have access to KULADEVATA and guru; there is a dilemma about whom to give priority. Objectively looking at it; the KULADEVATA as well as the human form of the guru are the products of the same omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent God.

Whom should we give preference?

In the course of practicing NAMASMARAN according to the advice of our guru; we gradually realize that kuladevata is a bounty of the omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent God; through which we are oriented to Him; and the guru is the bounty through whom we get closer to Him.

Later; through NAMASMARAN; we realize that; the essence of KULADEVATA and the essence of guru; is actually extremely pleasant, empowering, vitalizing and immortalizing bounty; very much present and evident in our conscience.

This perception gradually gets culminated in the realization that this essence of KULADEVATA, guru and all the deities and adorable entities; is the same as GURUTATVA.

This GURUTATVA; is truly the direct communion with God i.e. ultimate truth.

This can be (though not exactly, accurately or appropriately) compared with motherhood and fatherhood. We love and adore our mother and father and in the course of maturity; begin to worship the motherhood and fatherhood in nature.

GURUTATVA is a universal, eternal and the most sublime bond between us; and God (truth). When we happen to follow, dedicate and consume ourselves in the preachings of our guru; we actually imbibe or get merged into the source of our consciousness and our conscience; the GURUTATVA!

GURU DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
GURU DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Suddenly I felt like writing about the phenomenon of GURU.

One can like other individuals for one reason or another, such as one’s looks, talent, skills, or literary genius and creative genius of poets and filmmakers! One may like politicians and film stars for their wisdom and glamour respectively or even tempting spell they cast. One may like people because of the feeling of security one gets from them.

But apart from all these situations, sometimes; when one becomes totally selfless, totally objective, and somewhere deep in the heart of heart; one experiences the nearness of another individual. This nearness is unconditional. This nearness is extrasensory.

Moreover, it has nothing to do with any kind of physical pleasure or material gain. It is totally independent of social prestige, popularity, weightage, or sway on the society. In short this experience of nearness is beyond everything imaginable. This experience of nearness or shall we say, oneness, does not expect anything or does not aim at anything. It itself is ultimate achievement or fulfillment in life.

This is neither out of fear, nor out of insecurity!

This experience of closeness is independent of physical presence or any physical attributes.

This experience of total oneness with another individual may vary in terms of apparent nature of relationship.

This experience of relationship is the everlasting and ever assuring internal YAJNA to sublimate one’s subjectivity into objective consciousness.

This relationship between two individuals has spanned throughout history. It is beyond the boundaries of time and space.

I think such timeless; totally selfless unconditional love and liking between two individuals, where the subjectivity of one does not exist (GURU) and that of the other gets dissolved (SHISHYA) in the course of time, is GURU –SHISHYA relationship!

Actually this relationship is beyond time and human consciousness…

STROKE TREATMENT
role of endovascular intervention in stroke treatment– By Dr. Sunil Bhargava
MD, DNB, MNAMS, STA certified equivalence CCST (UK)

Endovascular therapy is a well-established treatment modality for a variety of cerebrovascular central nervous system disorders. Neuroendovascular approaches provide treatment options for conditions previously thought to be untreatable. Ongoing device developments and refinements continue to revolutionize the field. These refinements, along with a better understanding of the disease process allow minimally invasive neuroendovascular techniques to be used for treatment acute ischemic stroke and stroke prevention.

The majority of ischemic strokes are due to thromboembolic arterial occlusion
75% occurring in the ICA distribution. While mortality from middle cerebral artery strokes is low, there is a high morbidity, with only 20 – 25% of patients returning to an independent lifestyle. Posterior circulation strokes are more ominous, with significant mortality rates, up to 86.4% in one study. Over the past few years, there has been intensive investigation of intravenous thrombolytic therapy for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. At the present time, only tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA)/Urokinase, when administered within three hours of symptom onset, has definitively been shown to be an effective therapy.

The benefits of this therapy were demonstrated in the National Institutes of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) sponsored trial in 1995.This trial led to the FDA approval of t-PA for stroke treatment in June 1996. At present, only a small fraction of potentially eligible stroke patients are receiving treatment. The primary reason that patients are not eligible for this treatment is the very short, three-hour time window from symptom onset in which the agent should be administered. Intra-arterial recombinant t-PA (rt-PA) is suggested to be more effective than intravenous rt-PA. In local intraarterial (IA) thrombolysis, fibrinolytic agents are infused distal to, proximal to, and directly within thrombotic occlusions of main stem cerebral arteries, using an endovascular micro catheter delivery system. The dosage used is 0.3 mg/kg, up to a maximum of 10-20 mg intra-arterially. Direct infusion of thrombolytic agent near the thrombus allows greater concentration of agent, fewer systemic effects, more rapid dissolution of large
or multiple clots and an opportunity to carry out gentle mechanical disruption of the clot with the delivery catheter and wire. IA thrombolysis also has a number of potential disadvantages, including manipulation of a catheter within cerebral vessels, potentially increasing vulnerability to hemorrhage; the requirements for systemic heparinization during catheterization to deter catheter-induced thrombosis; and delay in initiation of thrombolysis.
The procedure is labour and capital intensive, and the number of facilities skilled in IA thrombolysis is small. Intra-arterial thrombolysis may be used in the anterior circulation (carotid circulation) up to 6 hours after onset of symptoms, although better results have been shown when administered within 3 hours. It is also used up to 12 – 24 hours after onset in posterior (vertebrobasilar) circulation lesions, because of the poor prognosis without therapy.

Despite the increased rate of symptomatic hemorrhage with intra-arterial administration of rt-PA, many trials have still demonstrated improved clinical outcomes versus placebo Of particular note is the first Phase III trial of IA thrombolysis, the Prolyse in Acute Cerebral Thromboembolism II (PROACT II) trial (5). In PROACT II, patients within 6 hours of symptom onset with symptomatic M1 or M2 middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusions were randomized to receive IA thrombolysis with systemic heparinization vs. heparinization alone. The prespecified primary outcome in PROACT II, a good or excellent score on the modified Rankin Scale of handicap, was achieved by 40% of the IA group vs. 25% of control patients (p=0.043). In addition, recanalisation rates 2 hours after initiation of infusion were markedly increased in the IA group. Intracerebral hemorrhage rates at 36 hours were increased in the IA group; however, no difference in overall mortality between the two groups was observed.
Another potential role for intra-arterial rt-PA is for postoperative stroke patients. The risk of stroke is approximately 2.9% in the immediate postoperative period. During a recent multicenter study of intra-arterial rt-PA administered during the immediate postoperative period, good results were obtained with only minimal complications. The local delivery of thrombolytic agent reduces systemic effects. Only patients who had previously undergone intracranial surgery had an unacceptably high complication rate. Further research is being conducted in the use of mechanical thrombolytic devices, as well as laser clot fragmentation. The advantages of these approaches include lack of systemic and hemorrhagic complications. Better public awareness is also needed, since fewer than 5% of eligible stroke patients actually receive thrombolytic therapy. In addition, faster diagnosis with MR diffusion and CT perfusion may help to identify patients who can benefit from thrombolysis.
Carotid artery stenting has important role in preventing stroke. It is of particularly suitable in case unfit for surgery, unfavorable anatomy, tandem lesions and relatively poor medical risk.

STRESS MAUNA AND SPEECH: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
STRESS MAUNA AND SPEECH: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

One of the causes of STRESS; for one who uses it; whom it is addressed to and with whom it is shared; is speech! Inadvertent use of words; their quantity, frequency, tone, pitch, loudness, expressions, in our speech (talk, writing, letters, articles, books, mails, SMS etc) can cause widespread STRESS!

The study and practice of Total Stress Management includes appropriate comprehension and expression of written and spoken and even unspoken speech (which has healing and rejuvenating characteristics)!

It is interesting to see how speech reflects the mind of a person; and in turn how it can influence us; beneficially or detrimentally!

One of the shlokas (verses in Sanskrut) says,
PAPENAIVA NRUNAANAM VAANEE BHAVET KATUKABHASHINEE
DAINYA MAATSARYA PARAMAA SHUBHAASHUBHAVIVARJITA
Meaning:
It is because of diseased mind with utmost lowliness and jealousy that the speech becomes scalding with no concern whatsoever for about the welfare or otherwise of the listener.

In Geeta it is said,
ANUDVEGAKARAM VAAKYAM SAYAM PRIYA HITAN CHA YAT
SVAADHYAAYAABHYASAN CHAIVA VANGMAYM TAPA UCCHYATE
GEETA 17.15

Meaning:
Speech which does not humiliate and thereby hurt the listener is true and pleasant and beneficial; is really the product of penance involving the entire neurophysiological and neuromuscular processes of speech and articulation respectively.

There is another shloka which advocates silence during certain physiological acts.
UTSARGE MAITHUNE CHAIVA
PRASTRAVE DANTADHAAVNE
SHRAADDHE BHOJANAKALE CHA
SHATSU MAUNAM SAMAACHARET
Meaning:
During defecation, urination, removal of secretions (dirt) of nose, skin, ear and eyes; during sexual intercourse, during bleeding, during cleaning of teeth, during SHRAADDHA (ritual performed to commemorate and pay homage to the forefathers, on the occasion their death anniversary); and while eating food one should observe silence i.e. speechlessness.

During defecation usually there is breath holding and contraction of abdominal muscles. This is essential for building adequate pressure in the abdomen so as to move the feces towards anus. Due to talking the breath holding ceases and the abdominal muscles also relax and distraction is caused creating difficulty in defecation.

Urination also involves increase in pressure in the abdomen and also in the urinary bladder. Talking can alter these pressures and hence the urinary flow can be disturbed.

When we are removing the secretions from nose [respiratory secretions], skin, ears and eyes we should be careful to remove the dirt carefully so as to avoid trauma to theses structures

In general, all the excretory processes, viz. defecation, urination, respiratory secretions, sweating, secretions in the ear and eye involve autonomic nervous activity linked with reticular formation in the brain. Talking can alter activity of respiration, reticular formation, and mind, autonomic nerves, endocrine system, metabolism and excretion.

Sexual intercourse invariably involves autonomic activity and hence it is strongly recommended that silence is observed during sexual intercourse. It is important because the intensity of the emotional integration and depth of ecstasy are apparently hindered due to talking during sexual intercourse.

Bleeding can either be physiological bleeding as in case of menstrual bleeding or trauma [injury].

The process of bleeding and arrest of bleeding are tremendously influenced by cardiovascular activity, which in turn is influenced by autonomic nervous activity. Hence talking that disturbs autonomic activity is recommended to be avoided.

During cleaning of the teeth there is a prayerful attitude with respect to the plants or herbs used in the process. So talking is avoided. But from practical point of view, talking during cleaning of teeth and gums can cause inadvertent biting of fingers or injury to the oral cavity.

During SHRAADDHA silence is probably advised solely for maintaining pious atmosphere, which is understandable.

During eating the silence advised to avoid vulgar and even mundane thoughts being articulated [thereby hindering the sanctity of the eating] on the one hand and to avoid accidental regurgitation of food in the trachea on the other.

It can be seen how thoughtful our ancestors were; with respect to understanding of life! It has to be appreciated that; these are relatively superficial aspects of keeping silence. There may be more explanations as well.

Learning to keep silence in terms of avoiding talk is a very preliminary process of achieving real silence, which is called KARMANI AKARMA in Geeta [4.18], and which is full of peace and activity. It is very real and deepest personal experience and also the cosmic phenomenon that links one with the universe.
MANAHPRASAADAH SAAUMYATVAM MAAUNAM AATMAVINIGRAH
BHAAVASAUNSHUDDHIRITYETAT TAPO MAANASAMUCCHYATE
GEETA 17.16

Inner harmony associated with vocal silence; that emanates life-giving joy; is indicator of inner purification or evolution and referred to as MANASA TAPA.

If we keep quiet for sometime, then we can easily observe the turbulence of thoughts, which keep on crowding our minds. This observation tells us that the thoughts are neither our creation nor are restricted to our body. They are the results of the interactions between cosmos and us and illustrate the continuity between an individual and the universe.

Keeping silence has a humorous and practical implication also.
AATMANO MUKHADOSHENA BADHYANTE SHUKA SAARIKA
BAKASTATRA NA BDHYANTE MAUNAM SARVAARTHA SAADHANAM
Meaning:
Inappropriate [too long, too harsh, stupid, meaningless, too enticing] speech is a cause of slavery, imprisonment or other type of losses. Ability to remain silent is extremely beneficial. This is clear from the examples of SAARIKA and parrot that are caught and kept in cage whereas crane is left free! Hence while negotiating in business or in politics or even playing cards, silence can play a pivotal role!

Let us appreciate that; the nature of our speech (or mauna); is determined by; our evolution in terms of perspective, policies, plans, programs and actions; in personal and social life.

GOOD MORNING: TOTAL STRESS MANAGEMENT: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
GOOD MORNING: TOTAL STRESS MANAGEMENT: DR. SHRINIWAS
KASHALIKAR

According to some, the time from 2.30 a.m. to the sunrise and according to some, the period of two hours before the sunrise constitute BRAHMAMUHURTA.

As the name suggests this time is the best time for conceiving, understanding, experiencing or merging with BRAHMA, the eternal truth, the eternal purity and the eternal bliss. This is the time of liberation from the shackles of every kind.

This is not a matter of belief but of experience; for those; who have experienced the joy of getting up at this time!

There is a Sanskrit shloka [verse], which depicts the sub-classification of this enchanting period.

PANCHA, PANCHA USHAHKAALA SAPTAPANCHAARUNODAYA
ASHTAPANCHA BHAVET PRAATAH SHESHA SURYODAYO MATAH

It means:
55 GHATIKA after the sunrise of previous day the USHAH KAALA the time of USHAA begins. After 57 GHATIKA, the time of ARUNODAYA and after 58 GHATIKA; the time of PRAATAH begins. The sunrise is SURYODAYA.

The day is constituted of 60 GHATIKA. GHATIKA is approximately equivalent to 24 minutes.

With the grace of God we are alive and see this beautiful sunrise and a chance of self realization. Hence it is most important to remember the name of God in the morning. Secondly, due to the grace of mother earth the fortune is granted to us to walk on her body through out the day. So; there is a tradition to be grateful (and express our gratitude in prayer as given below); to her before we start our day. This wisdom of wisdom; helps us to unite with the BRAHMA; of which we and the whole universe are extension. We are empowered by the Brahma and supported by various forces in the universe. This practice of expressing gratitude in morning makes us humble and environment-friendly!

The prayer is as follows:

SAMUDRAVASANE DEVI PARVATASTANAMANDALE
VISHNUPATNIM NAMASTUBHYAM PADASPARSHAM KSHAMASVA ME

The meaning is:
Oh goddess earth, who is clad in the beautiful attire of oceans and the mountains are whose bosoms and who is the wife of Lord Vishnu, I offer my grateful salutations to you and ask for forgiveness as I put my feet on you [touch you with my feet].

This prayer orients us appropriately in such a way that it opens up our hearts to the glorious bounties of earth and her love towards us. It starts nourishing us as well as gives us the perspective of loving our mother earth, which is so much essential for awakening our responsibilities towards her.

Then we pray
KARAGRE VASATE LAXMI KARAMADHYE SARASVATI
KARAMULE TU GOVINDAM PRABHATE KARADARSHANAM
The meaning is:
At the tips of the hand there stays Laxmi the goddess of prosperity
At the middle stays the goddess of knowledge Sarasvati
At the root of the hands stays Lord Govinda i.e. Lord Vishnu
Hence we watch our hands with reverence!

This is such a wonderful prayer! It helps us to reveal and establish the connections between the deities, which are the sources of our power. It helps us explore the potentials of prosperity, profundity and fulfillment in our life and thereby helps us develop respect for ourselves. Such respect as you know is essential for taking due care of our body while simultaneously directing it to do things in life which would help us in gaining holistic health.

There is one more and simple prayer in SHUKLA YAJURVEDA. It is as follows.

BAHU ME BALAMINDRIYAM HASTAU KARMA VEERYAM
AATMA KSHATRAMURO BHAVA
I pray that my arms and my all organs be strong and my soul and my heart be the healers.
SHUKLA YAJURVEDA 20.7.

This is real good morning and beginning the day with such a good morning is the beginning of total stress management! It is as if we have inhaled the healing spirit from the universe and are ready to heal and blossom ourselves and the others; throughout the day!

ROMANCE AND NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
ROMANCE AND NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Many times I used to confuse between; ideology, philosophy, spiritualism, religion, asceticism, austerity, penance, rituals, mysticism, occultism and so on. Somehow they used to appear contraposed to epicurean or hedonist way of life. They used to appear rather too serious for a common person like me. Why these matters; even the curricular subjects such as science, mathematics, geography, history and languages also appeared arbitrary and cut off from the day to day life. In medical career this feeling was further enhanced by the medical subjects!

Now I realize that my feeling was because of missing the essence of these subjects!

The essence of all these subjects is inevitably and inseparably linked with life! In fact; the core of these subjects takes us to the core of life and vice versa!

Exactly in the same way; NAMASMARAN appeared to be meant for ascetic or retired and weak senior citizens!

But now it is clear that NAMASMARAN is a lifelong and joyous evolutionary transformation; that gradually blossoms us; from within. It makes us objective as it reduces the subjective considerations. We learn to accept, love and respect others; unconditionally!

NAMASMARAN thus makes every moment and every relationship in our life; far more lively, romantic and actually immortal!!

SEX AND HAPPINESS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
SEX AND HAPPINESS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

The intense remembrance, affinity, and the acute desire of coming together is a common experience with opposite sexes.

The obsession to come together, the actual union and the memories of the union of opposite sexes; are pleasant and poetic.

But; somehow; these are seldom associated with permanent fulfillment. In fact; in spite of indulgence in sex; there is a vacuum and/or dissatisfaction in life.

As a result; in spite of coming together happily in every way; there is lack of peace, frustration, suffocation, or separation and divorces.

The question therefore is; “whether sexual gratification per se; leads to total fulfillment in life, or it is cursed with the burning feeling of incompletion; as the essence of sex is missed in active sexual life; due to lack of NAMASMARAN?”

The answer can be explored by introspection and actual practice of NAMASMARAN itself; and not by mere discussions or superficial conjectures.

BUT WHAT IS NAMASMARAN?

Namasmaran means; remembering the name of God, Guru, great souls; such as prophets and holy objects such as planets and stars. It may be remembered silently, loudly, along with music, dance, along with breathing, in group or alone, either with counting by rosary (called SMARANI or JAPAMALA) or without counting. The traditions vary from region to region and from religion to religion.

However the universal principle underlying NAMASMARAN is to reorient your physiological being with your true self. In fact while reorienting with true self you aim to establish and strengthen the bond or connection; between; your physiological being; with your true self. You aim at reunification with yourself!

Since remembering your true self is the pinnacle of or culmination of individual consciousness and individual consciousness is the culmination of every activity in life, remembering any name of God or Guru (any symbol of your true self) is equivalent to opening the final common pathway for the individual consciousness associated with every possible activity to get funneled into or unified with objective or cosmic consciousness.

Thus NAMASMARAN is in fact the YOGA of YOGA in the sense that it is the culmination of consciousness associated with every possible procedure and technique in the yoga that you are familiar with. It is the
YOGA of YOGA because it is the culmination of consciousness associated with all the activities in the universe, which it encompasses as well! It is YOGA of YOGA because everybody in the world irrespective of his/her tradition and the beliefs; would eventually, ultimately and naturally reach it; in the process of liberation. Even so called non believers also would not “miss” the “benefit of remembering the true self through one symbol or another”!

Just as NAMASMARAN is YOGA of YOGA it is meditation of meditation also! It is the natural and ultimate climax of every form of meditation.

These facts however have to be realized with persistent practice of NAMSMARAN and not blindly believed or blindly disbelieved with casual approach!

In short NAMSMARAN is super-bounty of cosmic consciousness for every individual to realize it (cosmic consciousness)! This is truly a super-bounty because a person, who experiences it, rises above mercenary, commercial and even professional and charity planes and manifest super-transactions in his or her life!

These are just few observations to give rough idea about what is NAMASMARAN. NAMASMARAN is an ocean of bliss. Its true meaning is beyond description in words and has to b experienced, most preferably, by billions!

STRESS OF ILLNESS -- DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
How to overcome the stress of diseases?

During our medical student days we read and learned extensively about the symptoms, signs, investigations and treatment of various diseases. We also learned about prevention of diseases. We read slogans like “health for all by 2000” and so on.

But we continue to observe diseases, debility and disability.

In fact; due to the information explosion, we read and see dreadful aspects of diseases and become miserably concerned stressed about physical health.

Our stress is further intensified by contradictory information and health tips given in print and electronic media! We are often agonized by questions such as “Why did I get this disease, even when I never did such and such a thing?” or we become guilt ridden by thoughts such as; “Why did I do that thing and got into this trouble?”

However, this information is fragmentary, biased or deliberately twisted and does not reflect the truth in true sense! Actually life is too vast. Apart from the much dreaded diabetes and heart diseases; there are several problems such as congenital diseases, infectious diseases, handicaps, accidents, natural disasters and personal/social evils/crises resulting from sectarian perspective, policies, plans and programs.

In short, our stress due to the superficial and deceptive information; further compounded by our tubular vision that jeopardizes our ability conquer the problems and we go on mismanaging it!

But let us not despair!

Actually, we have immeasurable and infinite storehouse of vitality inside us, which is not described or highlighted in media and this immense storehouse of globally benevolent potential within us escapes our own attention also; and we assume ourselves to be fickle, frail and fragile.

The best way to overcome the stress of diseases; therefore; is to realize this globally benevolent eternal light within us; and begin to express it to the best of our capacity. The diseases will come and go. But we would never be shattered.

How to realize and express this innate and universally beneficial power?

The answer is; NAMASMARAN!

We have to practice NAMASMARAN; and further; propagate its universal benevolence; which enables and empowers everyone; to live symbiotically and triumphantly; in any given field and in any given circumstance.

STRESS, SCIENCE AND CONSCIENCE: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
STRESS, SCIENCE AND CONSCIENCE: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

The stress and its manifestations in the world are due to the shearing forces of physical needs, natural instincts, emotions and intelligence; within an individual and society.

This stress has been there since time immemorial and was contained to some extent through the conventions, traditions, etiquettes, commandments, decrees, rituals, festivals etc.; evolved through consensus.

It was also contained through the education, which nurtured the process of appreciation and realization in everyday life; of the unity of true self and the intellectual, emotional, instinctual and productive (cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains) capabilities and aptitudes of an individual.

Thus the education guided the students to grasp and acquire the holistic perspective and its expression in day to day life for individual and global blossoming.

Today the education is; individualistic, petty, fragmented, sectarian, reductionist and hence divisive perspective and way of life. We in turn; become the victims of the divisive, disintegrative, individualistic, petty perspective; and the forces fission; which destroy global unity, harmony and blossoming; apart from our own peace.

In such a situation; it is essential to include the theory and practice of NAMASMARAN in all the syllabi, so that holistic perspective and forces of fusion, unification, harmonizing and blossoming at individual and global levels; can once again be consolidated and rejuvenated!

NAMASMARAN revitalizes the process of re-integration; in education, politics, industry, agriculture, business, arts, literature, health care, and especially the science and technology; with the true self; and its expression in what we learn, teach, plan, administer, research, practice and propagate; and ensure individual and global blossoming!

NEEDS AND DESIRES: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
NEEDS AND DESIRES: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Some of us; advocate indiscriminate suppression of desires; while the others uphold indiscriminate fulfillment of all desires!

70 billion people and innumerable animals and plants; have different instinctual, emotional, intellectual, psychomotor and creative needs. The irresponsible and indiscriminate suppression or gratification of these; has lead to universal stress at all levels in the form of poverty, hunger, deforestation, famines, global heating, on the one hand and corruption, indulgence, addictions, terrorism, persecution, riots and wars on the other.

We should not be obsessed by the idea of destroying the shad-ripus (six enemies); termed viz. KAMA, KRODHA, MOHA, MAD MATSAR and LOBHA. Conversely we should not advocate indiscriminate indulgence in these.

We should concede the fact that there ought not to be a regimentalization. The needs have to be differentiated from the desires, whims or fancies. The biological needs; of the fetus, newborn babies, infants, toddlers, children, youths, pregnant mothers, and the elderly, which are variable; must be optimally fulfilled.

The tangible culmination of seeking the truth; is holistic renaissance, superliving or Total Stress Management, i.e. holistic perspective, policies, plans and programs, which aim to optimally fulfill all the needs, while simultaneously promoting the blossoming of the individuals.
This is why; we must incorporate NAMASMARAN, in all the educational courses; as it orients us to our true self; and sublime duty (SWADHARMA); at different stages and in every walk of life.

In absence of this; both; our “materialism” as well as “spiritualism”; perpetuate pursuits of subsidy, profits, success in examination, promotion; or trance, bliss, ecstasy, moksha, mukti, nirvana; respectively and we continue to feel incomplete, restless, frustrated, depressed, weak and helpless in personal and social life and perpetuate vicious cycle of universal stress.

The best example is; we the people of world; who boast on their material and spiritual heritage; who have vast majority living in abysmal conditions, either by delirious choice or by ignorant compulsion.
