Menopause embrace gracefully with Ayurveda.
Menopause is not a disease. It is a natural process in a woman's life. It is a unique experience for every woman. It is the ending of a woman's monthly Menstrual Periods and Ovulation. It also signals other changes to the body and mind, brought on in part because the body begins producing lesser amounts of the hormones Estrogen and Progesterone.

How a woman views this time of her life can have a lot to do with how frequent and severe her symptoms are. If menopause is viewed as the end of youth and sexuality, this time will be much more difficult than if it is viewed as the next, natural phase of life, a time of greater freedom, liberation from the restrictions of youth. .

Although Menopause is one of the important physical milestones in a woman's life, with a proper diet, nutritional supplements, and exercise and simple lifestyle changes, most of the unpleasant side effects of menopause can be minimized to a great extent and with this knowledge and preparation you can step forward with grace and embrace Menopause.

Ayurveda links Menopause with Aging. Aging is a ‘Vata’ predominant stage of life. Thus, the symptoms of menopause experienced by some women are similar to the symptoms seen when the Vata dosha rises and upsets the normal balance of the body. Vata-type menopausal symptoms tend to include depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Menopause may also manifest itself as a rise in the other two humors also. Women with Pitta-type symptoms are often angry and suffer hot flashes. Kapha type symptoms include listlessness, weight gain, and feelings of mental and physical heaviness. The type of treatment depends upon the dosha in which the woman's menopausal symptoms are manifesting.

Here it is important to note that health problems at menopause represent imbalances in the body that were already growing in the body and are unmasked by the stress of shifting hormones. Menopause symptoms are Nature's wake-up call to let you know you need to start paying more attention to your health. Taking proper steps in the direction of balancing the imbalance doshas, paying attention to your diet and making lifestyle changes now is critical to ensuring that you age gracefully without the burden of chronic health problems.

Key factors in achieving Graceful Menopause –

A smooth Menopause Transition and Great Health in the years to come can be achieved with the help of –

1. Balancing Doshas - Ascertain the imbalance dosha according to your symptoms and follow the advice by an Ayurvedic Specialist to balance that dosha.

2. Balancing Diet - Diet plays a key role in balancing hormones during and after menopause. It is well known that Japanese women rarely experience hot flashes, probably because their diet contains large amounts of Soy/Soya, a food rich in certain plant estrogens called "Isoflavones." Soya products are not the only source of plant estrogens, however. Another equally healthful source of phytoestrogens are "Lignans," compounds found in a variety of whole foods including grains and cereals, dried beans and lentils, flaxseed, sunflower seeds and peanuts, vegetables such as asparagus, sweet potatoes, carrots, garlic and broccoli and fruits such as pears, plums and strawberries. Common herbs and spices such as nutmeg, turmeric and licorice also have estrogenic properties.

Eat a varied diet high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It’s a rich source of phytoestrogen. Variety and moderation are important because just as too much estrogen is unhealthy after menopause, too much phytoestrogen may also be dangerous.

Apana Vata, which governs the genito-urinary tract, elimination, and menstruation, is a key area to attend to when preparing for menopause. Drink plenty of warm water throughout the day. Eat plenty of cooked, leafy greens, as this helps elimination and is also a good source of calcium.

3. Panchakarma - More serious symptoms, such as frequent hot flashes, continual sleep disturbance, and moderate to severe mood swings, are signs of deeper imbalances.
Ayurveda describes that these stubborn symptoms are usually due to the buildup of wastes and toxins, referred to as "ama," in the body's tissues.

In this case, a traditional Ayurvedic Detoxification program "Panchakarma," may be needed to clear the body's channels and gain relief. This internal cleansing approach is also the treatment of choice for more serious problems such as osteoporosis and high cholesterol.

4. Rejuvenation Procedures: Speciality Rasayana Chikitsa or Rejuvenation Procedures are told in Ayurveda to rejuvenate the systems of the body and thus live a healthy, Peaceful and long life.

Ayurveda has excellent solutions for a safe and happy Menopause. There are several single drugs and preparations that can be taken by women who are nearing the age of menopause to remain symptom-free.

VAJIKARANA CHIKITSA – BEST AYURVEDA PROVIDES FOR HEALTHY SEXUAL LIFE.
Published in THE DECCAN CHRONICLE News Paper on Thursday 16th June, 2007 Written by Dr. R. KRANTHI VARDHAN, Chief Physician & Managing Director, Dr Kranthi’s Institute of Ayurvedic Sciences & Research, THE KERALA AYURVEDIC CARE, Speciality Panchakarma Centre, Basheerbagh, Hyd-29. Andhra Pradesh. India. Ph:092461 66636 098666 66055.

Ayurveda Anatomy and Physiology are based on Three factors— Dosha (Basic Body Constituents), Dhatu (Body Tissues) and Mala (Body Wastes). Ayurveda believes that Dhatu give structure to the body and they are the ones who function for the body under the governance of the Dosha. In all, There are Seven Dhatus: Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Medho, Asthi, Majja and Shukra. From Rasa (Life Sap) the body develops Rakta (Blood), from Rakta it develops Mamsa (Muscles), from Mamsa is developed Medho (Fat), from Medho is developed Asthi (Bones), from Asthi the body develops Majja (Nervous System) and from Majja is generated Shukra (Reproductive elements in body).
Shukra is honored as the Supreme body tissue, end product of body metabolism. Therefore, for Sexual Satisfaction, for Strength-Expressing performance and for better Progeny, the Shukra Dhatu should be in good state, and for this, the Dhatu chain should persistently function well. This is where Vajikarana Drugs (Aphrodisiacs) come into play. They help in giving Strength and Vigor to the Shukra Dhatu and in the long run to the body.

Because semen is the visible end product of the functioning of the chain of Dhatu, Practitioners of Ayurveda started believing that semen is very valuable and that it should not be wasted only for the sake of pleasure. The sole purpose of Shukra should be to produce Healthy Progeny, which is the base of Tomorrow’s Healthy Society. Thus, Ayurveda tried to bind sex in rules and regulations. It laid down certain dos and don’ts for sex. Abstinence was recommended so as to produce a mature, powerful Shukra Dhatu. This was believed by society and generations after generations said that if the whole of society followed these guidelines strictly then it would produce Tejaswi (Bright and Brilliant) and Ojaswi (those who have a stronger vital force supporting their life) progeny. A general understanding was to have sex for a better society and not for pleasure and hence, Vajikarana Drugs gained an important place in society.

Vajikaran Chikitsa is that branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda, which deals with all types of Physical, and Psychological Sexual problems like Impotence, Libido, Poor Erection and Early Ejaculation in Males and Sterility, Frigidity in Females. Ayurveda strongly believed that a weak Shukra Dhatu was the culprit behind all Male and Female Sexual Problems. Vajikarana Tantra claims that it has tips for a Normal, Healthy and Mature Shukra Dhatu, which is ultimately essential for satisfying and productive Sex.

Vajikarana thus basically comprises of Three components— A Disciplined Life Style, Conditional Sexual Act basing itself upon the assumption that Sex is for better reproduction and not only for Pleasure, and lastly, The use of Vajikarana Drugs (Aphrodisiac Medicinal Formulations) to achieve these Sexual Goals. This particular branch of Ayurveda has stressed on increasing Will Power and on holding the Shukra Dhatu i.e. Semen for a longer time. Shukra Dhatu is directly linked with good Health and Celibacy is equated with high Morality.
To summarize, Vajikarana Chikitsa (Aphrodisiac Medicines, Anabolic Drugs and Tonics) deals with Sexuality. It talks about Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Diet and Medicines involved in Sex. It states that Sex should be fenced by rules and regulations in order to maintain good Health and produce good Progeny.

Ayurveda brings about the balance between our Physical & Mental aspects and helps us to remain naturally beautiful. Herbs of tremendous medicinal values are found abundantly in nature. Ayurveda uses these herbs individually and in special blends to treat every kind of Physical & Psychological Problems.

As the Stress builds up, we move towards the Lack of Confidence and a feeling of Inferiority becomes a part of our Life. Lest the Thorn / The Cause/ The Toxins/ Stress is removed only then the normal healing mechanism of the body is initiated or else it effects the other organs of the body & thus Uncurable Diseases are produced.

Skin, the Largest Organ in our body directly reveals the energetic level of the entire Psychophysical unit, it is a transparent mirror where the movement of the doshas bring about changes also of a radical nature in its biochemical balance. Skin is the expression of our overall State of Health; this Stress invariably affects it. The diseases of the skin like Psoriasis, Eczema, Dandruff, Lichen Planus etc occur due to this Stress.

For Males as young as 25, Multiple Late Nights and Unlimited Stress can lead to a diminished Sexual Desire, Premature Ejaculation, Erectile Dysfunction, Impotency, Low Sperm Count, Semen Discharge with urine and the damaging feeling of Inferiority accompany with all these Sexual Problems. The same Stress factor in Females will lead to Low Sexual Desire, Infertility and Loosening of Breasts etc.

5000 years old ancient wisdom of Ayurveda has a lot to offer for millions of people to combat Stress, the effects of which are often associated with Skin, Sexual Health of the individuals. Since Times immemorable, Ayurveda has been advocating many Rejuvenating Recopies for Improving & Maintaining Good Health, which leads to a Normal and Happy Life thus improving the deficiencies without any side effects.

Treatment procedures mainly involve the changing of Nutritional Protocol & Life Style by which we can greatly influence our Physical, Mental & Emotional health. While each patient should follow a regimen Tailored to his/ her individual needs, the Five Classical Procedures are meant to Detoxify the human body- THE PANCHAKARMA CHIKITSA-are particularly beneficial. They are:

1) VAMANA: a Medicated Emesis Therapy cleanses Kapha collected in the body & decongests the Respiratory Tract.

2) VIRECHANA: a Medicated Purgation Therapy, removes Toxins from the body that are accumulated in the Gastro Intestinal Tract.

NECK PAIN / CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS - AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS & CURE
Published in THE HINDU News Paper on 28th Apr, 2005. Written by Dr. R. KRANTHI VARDHAN, Chief Physician & Managing Director, Dr Kranthi’s Institute of Ayurvedic Sciences & Research, THE KERALA AYURVEDIC CARE, Speciality Panchakarma Centre, Basheerbagh, Hyderabad-500029. Andhra Pradesh. India.. Ph: 092461 66636, 098666 66055.

What is neck pain?

Pain in the neck can be due to injury, a mechanical or muscular problem, a trapped nerve caused by a bulge in one of the discs between the vertebrae, or from arthritis of the neck.

It can range from very mild discomfort to severe, burning pain.

If the pain is 'acute' - sudden and intense it is called a crick in the neck or muscular rheumatism.

If the pain has lasted more than three months, it is termed 'chronic' neck pain.

Neck pain is a very common condition and is more frequently seen in women than men.

Most people will experience pain in the neck at some point in their life.

What causes neck pain?

Many things can trigger neck pain. These include:

Trauma or injury

Worry and stress

Falling asleep in an awkward position

Prolonged use of a computer keyboard.

For most people, no specific reason for the pain can be found. However, in some cases it is possible to make a precise diagnosis. The underlying problem could be Slipped disc, brittle bones (Osteoporosis) , Cervical Spondylosis, deformed natural curvature of the spine (Scoliosis) and, very rarely, structural damage due to Tumours or Infection. Finally, road traffic accidents involving whiplash injury may result in acute or chronic neck pain that takes several months to improve.

What does neck pain feel like?

General pain located in the neck area as well as stiffness in the neck muscles.

The pain may radiate down to the shoulder or between the shoulder blades.

It may also radiate out into the arm, the hand, or up into the head, causing a one-sided or double-sided headache.

The muscles in the neck are tense, sore and feel hard to the touch.

Acute pain can give rise to abnormal neck posture in which the head is forced to turn to one side
The pain at the base of the skull may be accompanied by a feeling of weakness in the shoulders and arms.

There may be a prickly or tingling sensation in the arms and fingers.

How does the doctor make a diagnosis?

In most cases, a neck problem can be diagnosed by carrying out a thorough examination that may include all or some of the following:

Testing the movement of the neck.

Testing for trapped nerves.

Examination of the muscles.

Examination of the movement of the joints of the spine, neck and hands.

How is neck pain treated?

Ayurveda suggests the following choice of treatment:

Diet management

Intensive muscle training, yoga, pranayama & other stress releaving exercises

Ayurveda & Keraliya Panchakarma Therapies for a period of 7/14/21/28 days according to the severity of the disease which includes Shiro dhara (pouring continuous stream of medicated oil, buttermilk etc on the fore head and doing a gentle & soothing head massage), Shiro vasti (A special technique of bathing the head in medicated oils using a special cap like apparatus), Abhyangam ( A whole body massage with specific herbal oils, achieves deepest healing effects by naturally harmonizing Body, Mind, Soul and the Senses), Nadi Swedam (medicated steam bath), Nasyam (administration of medicated oil through the nose, cleanses accumulated Kapha toxins from the head and neck region), Elakizhi (herbal leaf bundle massage), Shastika Sali Pinda Swedam/ Navarakizhi (A highly effective rejuvenation technique using a special type of rice that is cooked, tied into boluses and dipped into an herbal decoction and warm milk, then skillfully massaged all over the body), Pizhichil (medicated oil bath), Greeva vasthi (a treatment done on to the neck to decrease cervical spinal compression). etc.

What medication is given?

Medicines used in this treatment includes Thailams, Churnams, Asavams, Aristams, Ghrithams, Lehyams etc prepared from ayurvedic herbs like Rasna, Nirgundi, Dasamoola, Aswagandha etc based on severity, stage of the disease, age, prakruthi of the patient. Vata hara, Brumhana Oushada Ahara Vihara are also advised to these patients.

People with weak neck muscles are more prone to neck problems and in such cases, an exercise programme to strengthen the neck is a good idea. Pranayama and other neck exercises releaves the stress in the neck.

Future prospects:

This depends on the underlying cause of the pain. The prognosis is generally good, provided the patient remains active and obtains the correct treatment without delay.

Andhra Pradesh. India. Ph: 092461 66636, 098666 66055

According to Ayurveda, our natural state is one of health, happiness and an inner sense of well-being. "Health" is defined as the body being clear of Toxins, the mind is at peace, emotions are calm and happy, wastes are efficiently eliminated and organs are functioning normally.

In a Busy, Stressful and Toxic world, our Physical and Mental systems accumulate Toxins causing deterioration in bodily functioning. This eventually weakens our systems, which opens the door for Chronic, Degenerative, and Non-Specific Diseases to develop. These can evolve into Serious Specific Diseases, ultimately damaging an individual’s Health and Wellness.

Panchakarma can help by reversing these negative effects of daily living. It can restore your natural state of health and wellness by cleansing your body of toxins, bringing balance into your system and improving bodily function. It can also help you sustain this process by making positive changes in lifestyle.

The Panchakarma Therapeutic process appears quite simple in its application. However, its effects are powerful and effective. Panchakarma is a unique, natural, holistic, health-giving series of therapeutic treatments that cleanse the body’s deep tissues of toxins, open the subtle channels, bring life-enhancing energy thereby increasing vitality, inner peace, confidence and well-being.

“Erectile Dysfunction” / “Impotence” & Speciality ‘Ayurveda’ Treatments.
Published in THE DECCAN CHRONICLE News Paper on Thursday 15th Feb, 2007 Written by Dr. R. KRANTHI VARDHAN, Chief Physician & Managing Director, Dr Kranthi’s Institute of Ayurvedic Sciences & Research, THE KERALA AYURVEDIC CARE, Speciality Panchakarma Centre, Basheerbagh, Hyd-29. Andhra Pradesh. India. Ph:092461 66636 098666 66055.

“Erectile dysfunction” (ED), also known as ‘Impotence’, is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection for satisfactory sexual activity. Erectile dysfunction is different from other conditions that interfere with sexual intercourse, such as lack of sexual desire and problems with ejaculation and orgasm.

Erectile dysfunction (ED, Impotence) varies in severity; some men have a total inability to achieve an erection, others have an inconsistent ability to achieve an erection, and still others can sustain only brief erections. While ED can occur at any age, it is uncommon among young men and more common in the elderly. By age 45, most men have experienced ED at least some of the time.

The Causes of ED include:

Erection requires a sequence of events. Injury to any of these parts that are a part of Erection Sequence (Nerves, Arteries, Smooth Muscles and Fibrous Tissues etc) cause ED.
Lowered Levels of Testosterone Harmone Levels;
Over exertion Physically and Mentally: Working for longer hours in office, Mental Stress at office and home, Short Temperedness, Insufficient Sleep cause ED;
Neurological disorders, Hypothyroidism, Parkinsonism, Anaemia, Depression, Arthritis, Endocrine disorders, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases, Obesity, Prolonged bicycle riding, Past history of sexual abuse, Anxiety and Stress and Old age also cause ED.
Consumption of Anti Depressants, Tranquilizers and Anti Hypertensives for a long time, Addiction to Tobacco especially Smoking, Marijuana, Heroin, Cocaine etc, Excessive consumption of Alcohol cause ED.
Trauma or Injury to pelvic region and surgeries for the conditions of Prostrate, Bladdr, Colon or Rectal area may lead to ED.
A Diagnosis of Erectile Dysfunction is made in men who have repeated inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual performance for at least 3 months. Candid communication between the patient and the doctor is important in establishing the diagnosis, assessing its severity, and determining the cause.

The Physical Examination can reveal clues for physical causes of Erectile dysfunction. Common Laboratory Tests to evaluate erectile dysfunction include: Complete blood Picture, Semen Analysis, Urine Analysis, Lipid profile, Blood glucose levels, Blood Hemoglobin A 1c, Serum creatinine, Total testosterone levels, PSA (prostate specific antigen) Levels. A Psychosocial examination using an interview and questionnaire may reveal psychological factors contributing to erectile dysfunction. The sexual partner also may be interviewed to determine expectations and perceptions encountered during sexual intercourse.

Ayurveda defines Erectile dysfunction or ED as follows:

“Sankalpapravano nityam priyaam vashyaamapi sthreeyam
na yaathi lingashaithilyaath kadaachidyaathi vaa yadi!!

Ayurveda Speciality Treatments for "Diabetic Neuropathy"
“Diabetic Neuropathy”, or Nerve Damage caused by Diabetes, occurs in about 50 percent of people with diabetes. It tends to be seen most in people who have had the disease for more than 25 years. However, Neuropathy is more common in people who have High Blood Pressure or Cholesterol, a difficult time controlling their Blood Sugar and those over the Age of 40.

The Symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy vary depending on the part of the body in which the nerves are affected. Most commonly, people experience Tingling or Numbness in the Feet, but Neuropathy may also be present with no symptoms. The Pain or Numbness generally is minor at first and gets worse with time.

The most common type of Diabetic Neuropathy is called ‘Peripheral Neuropathy’, which affects the Nerves in the Arms and Legs. In people with this form of Neuropathy, Loss of feeling or Pain is first felt in the Extremities, especially in the Toes, Feet and Hands. While less common, Neuropathies in other areas of the body may also occur, so be aware of pain in the Thighs, Hips or any sudden Muscle Weakness.

‘Autonomic Neuropathy’ affects the Digestive System and the nerves that control Blood Pressure. This form of Neuropathy causes problems with the Bladder, Bowel, Sexual Response and Perspiration.

Monitoring your blood sugar levels routinely and keeping them within the normal range is the best way to protect your nerves against Neuropathy.

If a Doctor suspects Neuropathy, he or she will first do a complete Physical Exam, Checking Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, Muscle Strength, Reflexes and the Ability to Sense, Light, Touch and Temperature.

Diagnosis: If Neuropathy is suspected after this preliminary exam, your doctor may perform more Extensive Tests to determine the degree of the problem. This may include a Comprehensive Foot Exam to assess the Circulation and Sensation, as well as Check Reflexes and Test the ability to Sense Vibrations in the Foot, Nerve Conduction Study or an Electromyography, Ultrasound may be also done to diagnose Neuropathy.

If you are diagnosed with a form of Neuropathy, your doctor will discuss ways to better manage your Blood Glucose, including Meal Planning, Exercise or New Medications. Maintaining good control over Blood Sugar levels helps to lessen the pain and numbness and prevent the progression of Neuropathy.

If you have Peripheral Neuropathy, you may have to take special care of your feet to prevent infections from cuts and scrapes, which may occur without you realizing.

Use of Ayurvedic Special medicines like Vasanth Kusumakar Ras, Yogendra Ras, Shilajithwadi Loah, Siva Gutika etc will give Tremendous Results in managing all the Neuropathies.

The Aim of the Ayurvedic Treatment is to produce Brumhana or Santarpana (Nourishing), Vatahara and Anulomana Chikitsa. Panchakarma Procedures & Rejuvenation Therapies are done with utmost Care and Concern. For details contact us either in person or through email with details.

Eating Small, Frequent Meals low in Fat and Fiber may help prevent the gastrointestinal problems that may accompany Autonomic Neuropathy.

If the Neuropathy is causing Sexual Problems, there are Oral Drugs like Manmadha Ras, Shukra Vallabha Ras, Pushpadhanwa, Aswagandha Lehyam, Laghu Musali Pak, Brungarajasav, Dasamoolarishta etc. which can help to Treat ‘Erectile Dysfunction’ in men. Lubricants can be helpful for women.

AYURVEDA AND OSTEO ARTHRITIS (KNEE JOINT PAIN)
Published in THE HINDU News Paper on Thursday 23rd June,2005 Written by Dr. R. KRANTHI VARDHAN, Chief Physician & Managing Director, Dr Kranthi’s Institute of Ayurvedic Sciences & Research, THE KERALA AYURVEDIC CARE, Speciality Panchakarma Centre, Basheerbagh, Hyd-29. Andhra Pradesh. India. Ph:092461 66636 098666 66055.

Osteo Arthritis is the most common condition, affecting the weight bearing joints (e.g. knees, lower back, hips, etc.), often described as “Wear and Tear Arthritis”.

In human body the ends of the bones in normal joints are covered with a smooth, slippery tissue called cartilage, which provides protection to our bones. Joints also contain a fluid called synovial fluid, which acts as a cushion or "Shock Absorber" and lubricates the joint. In people with osteoarthritis, the synovial fluid becomes thinner and loses its elasticity. The thinner synovial fluid does not provide a good cushion. For this reason, the cartilage covering the ends of the bones begins to break, which leads to pain and stiffness in the joint. Osteoarthritis is also known as Degenerative Joint Disorder, because of degeneration of cartilage covering the ends of the bones. In Ayurveda this condition is called as "Sandhighat Vata".

This condition can be a very mild disease or a severe disease that greatly limits everyday activity. For example, if patient has Osteoarthritis of the knee, patient may feel pain and swelling in the knee area and pain gets worse during movement of the knee. Patient may feel or hear crunching or cracking sounds on movement of joints. X-rays usually confirm diagnosis.

Ayurvedic Science is based on the principles of Bio-energy. There are three types of Bio-energies or Doshas called Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which control metabolism and all other functions of human body. The equillibrium of the Doshas provide complete health and imbalance of these Doshas lead to various disorders. Osteo Arthritis (Sandhighat Vata) is a Vata disorder in which excessive Vata energy causes dryness in the joints followed by Pain, Swelling Immobility and Stiffness of the affected joints.

Ayurvedic Therapy in Osteo Arthritis not only prevents further deterioration in the joints but also rejuvenates the damaged cartilages. Ashwagandha, Guggul and Shilajit, one capsule or tablet each twice a day with large glass of water for six months produce excellent results in Osteoarthritis. These herbs do not cause any side effect even for long-term use. As acute pain may not be felt in every case of degeneration, one must think of starting treatment at the very initial stage.

Ayurveda & Keraliya Panchakarma Increases Mobility and Decreases Disability in Osteo Arthritis. The Therapies include: Abhyangam, Swedam, Elakizhi, Pizhichil, Navarakizhi, Janu vasthi, Virecanam, Matra vasthi etc. These differ from person to person and are decided by a Specialist Ayurvedic Physician according to the Age, Severity, Intensity, and Disability of the patient.

Ayurvedic Diets and Life Styles are selected as per constitution of the individual. One should avoid being Overweight, because excess Weight increases the load on the Joints. Regular exercises of Knee Joints help the patient to remain fit.
