PRAYER FOR HOLISTIC RENAISSANCE: DR SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
PRAYER FOR HOLISTIC RENAISSANCE: DR SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Many of us may have a strong objection to prayers. They may feel that such praying is an indication of weakness, diffidence and dependence.

According to some; this can be even paranoid behavior.

Even as I have no intention to change this point of view (as that can happen only through their experience and not by mere explanations), it is still thought appropriate to give explanation, which may prove helpful to the concerned ones.

The prayers are meant for getting strength from the infinite cosmic powers, which are present inside and outside; we being their extensions.

These powers (cosmic ‘energies’, gods and goddesses) can be compared to the powerhouses; and us with the electric bulbs, which are the extensions of the powerhouses. In case there are blocks in the wiring, then the bulbs will not illumine.

In case of human beings ‘blocks’ develop due to; ego, pettiness and superficial values. These ‘blocks’ can be effectively removed by the prayers; and remembering the name of God (NAMASMARAN); thereby connecting ourselves with the source of empowerment of the consciousness and the universe.

We can take another example. We are leaves of a life tree. Because of ego we tend to identify ourselves as isolated, alienated, disconnected, discrete, disjointed ‘leaves’! This makes us weak, petty, arrogant, diffident, cynical, depressed and frustrated. Prayers are like reestablishing the link with the roots of the tree of which we are the leaves!

It is always healthier; to read, think over, scrutinize and verify the contents; rather than accepting them blindly; and also; it is healthier; not to discard anything blindly; without due consideration, efforts for verification and personal experience!

This holds true for prayers also; hence let us consider the following prayer!

SARVETRAH SUKHINAH SANTU SARVE SANTU NIRAMAYAH
SARVE BHADRANI PASHYANTU MA KASCHIT DUKKHAMAPNUYAT

Let everyone be happy, healthy and well meaning and let there be no grief in anyone’s life. SUKHINAH means happy. Happiness here; is pure, which revitalizes the environment. NIRAMAYAH means clean, unprejudiced and selfless. BHADRANI means individual and universal blossoming. DUKKHA is tribulation or suffering; of separation from the true self and trapped in petty self.

STRESS, AND RESTLESSNESS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
STRESS, AND RESTLESSNESS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

When we study STRESS; we find that one of the greatest enigmas of life is restlessness! The restlessness of unknown origin! More often than not, restlessness is not related to any particular want, though; it may be compounded with hunger, thirst, insecurity, sexual deprivation, and so on.

We complain (and keep on doing so) round about everything such as price rise, water shortage, load shedding of electricity and hike in bus fare. At home we keep on grumbling or complaining about almost every issue; such as children, their study, ill health, lack of attention and even climate!

But when one thing is satisfied; the complaints about new issues start erupting! We can not stop complaining and grumbling.

We may try several activities to “quench” our restlessness. But we find that; we are only temporarily satisfied and the new reasons for our complaints emerge! All in all; we get fed up; in the unavoidable cycle of restlessness, complaints, fulfillment and new reasons for restlessness and complaints!

Life becomes an unending travel of travails; and we try to escape in a variety of activities such as sports, physical exercise, athletics, gymnastics, acrobatics, swimming, crafts, music, trekking, painting, dancing, purchasing etc. But nothing whatsoever, provides lasting fulfillment to us.

We; try to socialize, gossip, share our feelings, thoughts, ideas, get involved in charity or else we get immersed in gambling, horse race, drinks. But still remain empty, hollow and restless. Our complaints continue.

What is the reason?

The reason is; restlessness is like enormous power within us; that has no direction. It agitates but does not lead! It irritates but does not help deicide. It excites but does not orchestrate. It arouses but does not channellize. It torments; but does not by itself; evolve us! Restlessness; thus; by itself; is like fire that has be channelized.

Our restlessness becomes worse when we succumb to arguments and propaganda, which provoke, promote and perpetuate contradictions and confusion. We are trapped in various ideas of morality, ethics, religions, ideologies; while the actual reality seems to uphold everything contrary.

Our restlessness is therefore aggravated and converted into anguish, agitation, rage, frustration and gets expressed into useless or counterproductive suicidal activities or gets transformed into criminal activities.

We have to understand this immense though potentially beneficial restlessness and channellize it and guide it, holistically; in every field of personal and social life!

This is why; Total Stress Management that embodies the study of; meaning, causes, dimensions, effects, mechanisms, support systems and the management of stress; is essential. It enables us to evolve global perspective, policies, plans and their implementation in all the fields such as holistic education, holistic medicine etc.

All this; coupled with the practice of NAMASMARAN; so as to bring about international laws, rules, regulations and also the fashions and conventions; conducive to individual and global blossoming; is called SWADHARMA.

Let us understand that; in absence of this; even if we are provided with the best of everything; our stress and restlessness would not subside!

In other words; restlessness, which is an enigma and a major cause of stress; can be conquered; only if we ourselves begin to undergo the metamorphosis or conscious evolutionary transformation; rather than blaming others; through NAMASMARAN, and share our convictions about Total Stress Management i.e. SWADHAMRA; with others.

HEALTH, SUPERHEALTH AND SUPERLIVING: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
HEALTH, SUPERHEALTH AND SUPERLIVING: DR. SHRINIWAS
KASHALIKAR

When there is prevalence of individualism; the other concepts and behavior also become sectarian, fragmented and mediocre. This appeals to the mediocrity; but directly or indirectly becomes an obstacle in the process of holistic renaissance.

One of such concepts is “health is wealth”!

We understand and appreciate that the concept is not ill intentioned and not dishonest. But the question that comes to our mind is; is health only wealth? Is that all?

We link the health with financial profit; and disease with economic loss. This is because money has acquired supreme position in our mind. We cannot see anything better than money. Naturally we equate health with monetary profit!

This is due to our tubular vision about human life! We are not wrong; but utterly superficial, fragmented and inadequate. We cannot see the ocean of ambrosia; that life is!

Wealth can get us stooges and servants; but not genuine friends and warm, affectionate and loving relationship. Wealth can get us comforts but not happiness. Wealth can provide us with means; but not the conscience, courage, motivation and endurance to use them appropriately; to our heart’s content.

But if we properly understand what health means; then it would clear that it can get us much more than what wealth can get us; and then we would not equate it with wealth!

Basically we intend to high light the importance of health; by saying “health is wealth”!

But why is health neglected?

It is not neglected because we want to fall sick and suffer!
It is not because we want to be unhealthy and waste money!

We must remember that; we tend to neglect health mainly because we consider health as only physical health! Hence we it does not appeal us; especially when our need is instinctual, emotional and intellectual. We do not see the health in its entirety and its pivotal role in life.

Health restricted to body and economy; may appeal and charm mediocre elements amongst; fitness professionals, showbiz individuals, gymnasts, athletes, body builders, fitness freaks and others directly or indirectly benefiting from it.

But such health equated with mere physical health; does not appeal to many intelligent, creative, and conscientious, well meaning, sincere and basically selfless individuals. This is because their main concern is not selfish “physical health”! They are not interested in such selfish and mediocre physical health; cut off from its implication on mind, intelligence and society!

This is why; when we are young and charged with ambitions, utopia, aspirations, vague restlessness, unexplainable excitement, craving for friendship, urge for love, agony of romance, eagerness for challenges and attraction for adventures; physical health is rendered secondary.

This is why; reckless about health and wealth; we try to experience that love, romance, adventure and thrill in alternative sources such as tobacco, alcohol, or something else; even if that is bad for physical health.

Health is actually; evolving and applying holistic perspective, policies, plans, programs and their implementation; in personal and social life. To separate it from the mediocre and selfish physical health; we call it holistic health or superhealth, which implies; individual and global blossoming; i.e. holistic renaissance or superliving.

The common and simplest way for holistic or superhealth; is NAMASMARAN; according to the immortal leaders of mankind. It implies; remembrance of true self or cosmic self. It can be practiced according to one’s own tradition and does not involve any “conversion” or imposition!

SELF, STRESS AND SYSTEM: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
SELF, STRESS AND SYSTEM: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

When we refer to ourselves as “I” or “we”; we do not really know what we are referring to.

Our “I” or “we” actually refers to a combination or mixture of phenomena such as our physical needs, passions, emotions, concepts, convictions, ideas, and perspectives and so on. This mixture incorporates the pleasant and unpleasant memories of our past experiences, and future dreams, which may be emotional, economic, social, cultural, religious, and racial. In addition; the components of this mixture are variable in terms of the proportions, intensities and influence at different times, age, maturity and situations.

The chaos within our “I” and “we” and the chaos in the society complement each other and create either a vicious cycle or a wellness cycle depending upon our ability to manage stress within and outside.

Most of us are unable to manage stress inside and outside because our “I” and our “we” is torn apart between our passions, emotions, concepts, likes, dislikes, dreams, aspirations, missions; and our priorities. Often we think very nobly but are constrained, restrained and made helpless in terms of our actions in personal and social life.

Even as psychology textbooks, counselors, spiritual leaders, moralists, social thinkers and egalitarian leaders; preach a variety of norms for total revolution; let us realize that NO arbitrary formula or commandments can bring about individual and universal blossoming.

Neither an individual nor the system per se; is exclusively responsible for the ubiquitous suffering. Both complement to either vicious or wellness cycle. Inappropriate decisions at personal and social levels vitiate the system, which in turn; aggravates chaos in individual and social life!

NAMASMARAN is said to culminate the passions, emotions, fetishes and fancies into true “I”; our innate core. It is also said to embody; the evolution and crystallization of practical concrete solutions; in terms holistic perspective, policies, plans and implementation; so as to rectify the system and thereby conquer the inner and outer evils; and realize individual and global blossoming.

STRESS AND BLESSINGS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
STRESS AND BLESSINGS: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Some years back “stress” was not heard of. We were never taught “stress” in our undergraduate and postgraduate medical curriculum. In contrast, these days everybody is talking about “stress”.

Actually stress is normal and inseparable part and a hallmark of life. It is a physio-gnomic symptom of life! In other words; presence of stress indicates normalcy and liveliness. If we don’t have stress, it means we are dead!

Stress is like fire; if not managed (channelized) properly it can burn us and if managed (channelized) properly it can enliven and enlighten us! But if it is absent then we are cold, clammy and dead.

If we approach a god man or god woman for stress management; through blessings; then we must understand that; blessings imply blossoming of an individual and the universe and not monetary profit. However many of us expect “blessings” to provide petty gains and when we don’t get those; suffer miserably!

If a god man or a god woman is properly trained and adept in stress management; or enlightened through NAMASMARAN, then he/she would never give false promises. Conversely; if we, practice NAMASMARAN, then it can help us grow strong and immune to stress and deception.

STRESS EQUALITY AND NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
STRESS EQUALITY AND NAMASMARAN: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

When we see inequality in the form utterly miserable living conditions on the one hand and extremely luxurious life style on the other; we almost instantly feel the need for equality.

This is so, especially if we are not used to, habituated to; or addicted to; luxurious life style or miserable poverty; because such addiction makes us callous and insensitive; or helpless and moribund; respectively!

The innate urge for equality is actually due to the humane feeling that we all (and not just few) should get food, shelter and other pleasures of life. This noble pursuit of equality is thus due to our high emotional quotient and being one with the aspirations of millions! The urge for equality is born out of our sensitivity; whether we belong to the class of luxurious life style, middle class or utter poverty and socio-economic exploitation.

Thus Gautam Buddha was a king; Karl Marx was born in middle class; while Dr. Ambedkar was born in socio-economically exploited class, but the revolutionary idea of equality was articulated by all three; as a vitally important value and was upheld by millions.

But the noble vision of Buddha, Karl Marx and Dr. Ambedkar; which we seemed to share once; are far from being realized. The aspirations of millions are still being throttled in the abysmal and miserable living conditions. Even as the slogan of “equality” has stayed in the forefront; it has hardly made any difference in the life of millions.

Why is this so?

Why have we failed to bring the dream of equality in reality?

Why do we still suffer from the STRESS of inhuman inequality, disparity and discrimination in and around?

Have we failed to understand the essence of the teachings of Buddha, Marx and Dr. Ambedkar?

Have we failed to rise above our subjectivity and pettiness and to help ourselves and our brothers in getting empowered?

Are we knowingly or unknowingly trapped in the semantics?

Are we playing with the words?

Are we indulging in slogan mongering for the sake of our petty gains and vested interests?

Are we shackled (and opted to be shackled) in illusory, sectarian and ineffective “solutions” such as favors, subsidies and reservations?

Have we knowingly or unknowingly; “misused” the slogan of “equality” for getting blind followers and building sociopolitical clouts; for our ulterior motives?

The answer is:
We have not understood, appreciated and internalized the spirit underlying the concept of equality. We have also not realized the immaculate and impeccable essence the element of complementarity inherent and integral to our dream of equality. Our sublime emotion associated with the urge of equality; is not enriched by the wisdom of appreciation of the complementarities; and has therefore remained naive and in restrictive shackle; that is hampering our blossoming!

We would continue to fail in absence of the wisdom of appreciating complementarity inherent to the concept of equality! In fact; if we go on insisting on unrealistic and impossible equality; it would indirectly and unknowingly help the spirit of exploitative inequality amongst us!

Insistence of mere superficial or external aspects of equality in terms of similar food, similar clothes, similar houses, and similar behavior is obviously fanatic and coercive! It throttles our blossoming of all species! This is because; the spirit of equality embodies complementarity and freedom of growth and blossoming of everyone! This spirit of equality gets jeopardized by insistence of superficial or external aspects of equality!

Let us see; how in the following instances; mere insistence of superficial or external aspects of equality; harms and does gross injustice!

An infant without teeth should get milk or other liquids, a grown up person with good teeth should get food that can chewed and eaten and an old person with dentures should get food that could be easily chewed with dentures.

The children should get toys and blessings, grown up people should get scope for fulfilling their creativity and productivity according to their aptitudes; and elderly should get rest, respect and opportunity to advise, pamper and bless the youngsters!

An ailing individual should get care and a healer should get freedom to deliver the care! A mother should get the freedom to breast feed and a new born to suckle!

We differ in our constitutions, capabilities, strengths and weaknesses and hence should have a provision for being groomed to fulfill our selves and contribute to the blossoming of society.

But apart from this ineffective and counterproductive fanatic and coercive insistence of superficial and external equality; many of us insist on more sophisticated equality of opportunity or material abundance. They feel that material abundance would nullify all the inequality and injustice.

This is also not true. If I am provided with all the abundance; without wisdom; then in all probability I am likely to misuse it to my own and others’ detriment.

Conversely; vain glory of spiritual equality; without consideration to material conditions; is certainly; a cruel mockery of the concept of equality. It blatantly supports and strengthens the spirit of exploitative inequality.

Thus, distributing pamphlets of “spiritual wisdom” to those amongst us who are “equally and uniformly starved”; or “are equally diseased” as in epidemics; is callous humiliation of the complementarity inherent to the true spirit of equality.

It is necessary to understand that equality in its true spirit is actually; commonality that runs through not only all human beings; but also through other species. Hence appreciation of this commonality is true spirit of equality; and most justifiably upholds with utmost intensity; the provision of everything that is required for the blossoming of all the individuals and the species!

This value of provision of everything for the total blossoming of one and all; is magnanimous, insuperable, invincible and essential. It helps everyone to ascend from; getting all the optimal material provisions; to the ultimate aspiration of realization of the eternal bliss.

Based on this holistic perspective; we can evolve and practice international policies, plans, programs, laws, conventions, national constitutions, local laws/rules essential for realizing the visions of Buddha, Marx and Dr. Ambedkar! This is Total Stress Management i.e. blossoming of one and all!

It is said by the saints; that; for the true equality to materialize; it is urgent and essential that; in addition to the billions of people practicing NAMASMARAN; many more billions; in every nook and corner of the world; have to practice NAMASMARAN; with far greater intensity and selflessness.

SANSKRIT PROMOTION: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
SANSKRIT PROMOTION: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

Sanskrit promotion is not useful for our livelihood. It is not useful for competitive career or business. It is not spoken by anybody; excepting probably very few Veda Pundits. In short; Sanskrit promotion is not likely to yield any personal material benefit at all!

But Sanskrit appears to harbor the wisdom of ancient visionaries and the enlightened scholars in different fields of knowledge and art; and its promotion therefore seems to hold the key to global blossoming. Hence its promotion is a response; to the inner urge of global conscience!

Some practical steps for Sanskrit promotion could be:

1. Thinking about day to day life/circumstances and offering the wisdom for global welfare e. g.

NA VYDHIH NA VISHAM TAPAT
TATHA NADHISHVA BHUTALE
KHEDAYAH SWA SHAREERSTHAM
MAURKHYAM EKAM YATHA NRUNAM

2. Dwibhasha samvadam: Trying to communicate where ever possible and feasible in two languages including Sanskrit.
3. Audiovisual aids for pronunciation
4. Sanskrit News and/or Bilingual news on all channels (as case of news for deaf) and Sanskrit news in all the news papers every day
5. Spread of Sanskrit hymns records, audio cassettes, audio and video CDs, DVDs, MP3s, power point presentations
6. Incentives right from beginning for students, teachers and Veda pundits; through scholarships, awards, honors, felicitations and honorary degrees and titles
7. Efforts by the Sanskrit path-shalas to recognize the problems in society and participate in solving them; thus becoming; “relevant”.
8. Developing soft ware for Sanskrit translation and translation to Sanskrit from other languages.
9. Publishing Sanskrit notes, tips, quotes, Subhashita; in periodicals of all languages.
10. Making commercial Sanskrit movies and plays, besides Sanskrit based performing arts

NISHKAMA KARMA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
NISHKAMA KARMA: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

One of the interpretations of this Sanskrut word is work without expectation of a specific result.

In day to day life; we can conceive this as focusing on the excellence in the task; and not on the result of task, which could be award, fame, reward, money, honor, power, popularity; etc.

But if we go a little deeper; then we get even more profound interpretation.

If we consider any activity or task, then we have; doer, the act of doing and the deed.

The experience of oneness of all these is considered the excellence or God! If the doer is alien from the act of doing and the deed, then he or she is not in the core of the deed and not one with God! He/she is in immersed in peripheral consideration; result; which is MAYA; a variable subjective phenomenon.

In other words; the “soul”, the “core” or the ultimate purpose of any work or task; is ISHWAR. The result and subjective perceptions about the result; are MAYA!

This is actually an art of making our “whole being”; selfless, objective and universally blossoming! Hence it is taught by most saints; to do NAMASMARAN during every action!

It is said; that as we grow further; NAMASMARAN becomes so intense; that we get connected with the NAMA i.e. ISHWAR and every act of ours; or actually our mere existence becomes the most blossoming activity; the true NISHKAMA KARMA.

SARVETRAH SUKHNAH SANTUH: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
SARVETRAH SUKHNAH SANTUH: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

One of the questions that often disturbs us is; “what is the sense in praying for the welfare of all, when it is an impossible proposition?”

Is it not true that it is impossible for every one to be happy?

Why should we pray for such unrealistic goal?

In Sanskrit there is a prayer as follows:

Sarvetrah sukhinh santu
Sarve santu niramayaah
Sarve bhadrani pashyantu
Maa kaschit dukkham aapnuyat

Grossly speaking this means:
Let every body be happy
Let every body be pure at heart
Let every body see (experience) divinity
Let every body be free from sorrow.

Is this ever possible?

Can all; around 7000 million people of world; be happy, pure, divine and free from sorrow?

Is this possible in view of innumerable varieties of psychological and physiological variations, diseases, handicaps; besides; political, economic, cultural and other variations?

Is this possible (even if all 7000 million human beings and other living beings are emancipated) if we consider the millions of human beings and other living beings being born a new; every second?

What about the other living beings such as animals and plants, which are often brutally killed and eaten or used for leather, fur, teeth, blood, bile etc; or exploited in other ways?

Similarly is it really ever possible to have unconditioned love, equality, nonviolence etc, in view of our different, variable and varying personalities, constitutions and tendencies (e.g. cheating, exploitative, criminal)?

The answer to this question is:

In view of the nature of NATURE; we can not predict the future of the universe in terms of detailed characteristics. It is not desirable also to plan (because it is unnatural, absurd and arbitrary) a detailed protocol/blue print for the whole universe (or even an individual); and expect or impose it coercively!

But; while the prayer is for universe; it automatically helps us; in our blossoming and transformation; from TAMOGUNA and RAJOGUNA to SATVAGUNA; and finally to the state of GUNANATEETAVASTHA i.e. from baddha (state of bondage) to mumukshu to sadhak to siddha. Siddha is the state of eternal freedom. It is a state of blissful, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent experience; which is called AMRUTANUBHAVA.

The prayer and its effect (attainment of AMRUTANUBHAVA) continue through ages; to serve the ever renewing life everywhere and in all forms; from time to time. This perfectly concurs with the eternally valid enlightened wisdom in the apparently simple preaching of “NAMASMARAN for the sake of only NAMASMARAN”; by Shri Gondavlekar Maharaj from Gondavle in India.

SIMPLE AND DIFFICULT: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR
SIMPLE AND DIFFICULT: DR. SHRINIWAS KASHALIKAR

If our physical strength, speed, maneuverability, flexibility, endurance, psychomotor skills, intellectual ability can match; then we find that particular task or topic easy and if not, then we find it difficult.

But in spite of excellent overall capacity; we find the total stress management; a difficult topic and difficult topic.

Why is this?

It seems; that this is because; Total Stress Management requires; “growing from within”! It is an uphill task. It is true that it is very difficult to “grow from within” by voluntary or conscious efforts.

In fact, we don’t even know that we need to “grow from within”! We are trapped in what may be called “biological entropy”! But we are not even aware of it! We “enjoy it” in our casual approach, laziness, despondency, lethargy, gossip, passiveness, escapism, hatred, envy and backbiting!

But we can overcome the sickening enjoyment of this “biological entropy” without voluntary efforts, even if it is difficult! We have a traditional, yet powerful tool.

This tool is NAMASMARAN! It initiates a much stronger process of inner blossoming; and helps us to conquer the “biological entropy”! It is accepted by a huge majority in the world. But it is not yet practiced by threshold number; with adequate intensity, understanding and insight; of its potentials and scope.
